  • ^^^ awesome stuff!

Never done much proper adventure racing as such, but just about everything I've entered ends up taking factors of 5x longer than you think it should to complete.
Wonder what the other 2 finishing riders were on, fat bikes too or normal rigs?

If I lived somewhere with that much snow on the ground for so long I'd defo consider one

  • How do you get to that special place inside where commuting to work in all weathers doesn't matter?

Or do you all have shower facilities and lockers to keep your work things fresh and dry?

  • Showers really help.

I used to pay for a gym near work for that reason, and use the locker all day and go change there after work. It wasn't a nice gym, but then I viewed it more as a rented shower and changing room.

  • Having somewhere to have a wet kiss is good too.

Thats how i read it at first glance. agree.

  • I tend to dry my kit under my desk at work. Stuff shoes with newspaper and hope for the best.

I do have a shower at work though which helps.

  • Having somewhere to hang wet kit is good too.

Otherwise it's wet socks and kecks on at hometime, which isn't the most fun you can have.

We have a big cupboard at 50C with fan assisted ventilation. Its drying polystyrene foam samples before testing.........Unless my cycle gear is wet.

  • If its not snowing. I imagine the window, where a fatbike is ridable, and a standard MTB needs carrying or is very slow, is pretty darn narrow. So it'll just be a little heavier up hill.

I hope to enter the Birkenbeiner next year.
It'll have to be on a rigid SS 29er, which will be mad spinny on the tarmac sections, and deadly on the downhill finish (snowless ski slope)...or a fatty hardtail, which will be fecking heavy on the climbs.

So I wont be winning it. The question is which would be more fun?

  • I hope it won't be snowing in September.

  • IMHO a fatbike can do pretty much anything a MTB can. Its probably just a little heavier. With this extra weight in the wheels. The difference in performance is only really important for racers and forum arguers ;)

    Ride what you have.

I wonder how much some a fatbike would help in this?

  • Shouldn't be riding anything in that.

  • An early part of Saturday's off-road to Brighton ride was like that. Except it was probably liquid waste that the farmer had sprayed rather than mud.

    Not pleasant.

  • We get those conditions a lot. It rains a shite load through spring, and at the same time theres tonnes of snow melt pouring off the mountains. After a very wet 2012 so far. Big chunks of the areas I usually ride arent there anymore. The last 2 Birkebeiner events have been massive wash-outs.

    CXSS i Birken. Go!

  • *not trying to derail - but has anyone had any experience with actual snow bikes?

    as in:

I seen a couple when I was away snowboarding they look like great fun, the guys I spoke to made theirs.

I had planned to use the fully rigid SS 29er. Its crazy light, but I worry about the long flat sections, and my spinny gear.

...need to get entry first anyway ;)

  • rad ^^

yes a couple of year ago I spent a couple of days on them in the alps. they're fucking great. I'd never been skiing before, so thought I'd prefer these (and find them easier) and yes I did. so fun and definitely doesn't hurt to fall over.
