According to a new website that claimed to have an statement from a rider who witnessed the crash, Wouter looked over his shoulder and had a slight pedal strike on a low wall on his left hand side lost control and collided with a wall on the other side of the road.
I have no idea whether that is accurate or not.

From what I have seen and what I have read that appears to be the case.
Looks like he took the full force of the fall with his face...
+1 JohnnyHotDog, if you get to see the footage don't. It is really harrowing.
Rest easy now WW.

Jesus, one of the top ranked news sites on Google has some images that are just not on. The dude has family ffs and nobody bar the race doctors should see him like that.
Very sick and sad. The news people should be hung. I had the misfortune of seeing the footage and i wanted to vomit.
Very sad. R.I.P -

I have no interest in snuff movies.
Sad news indeed.

Very tragic indeed.
Just shows how fine a line, pro cyclists are riding on these decents. There'll be a big inquest, but its difficult to see how it could have been avoided. Such a horrible waste.

It couldn't have been avoided, tragically it was just pure bad luck. In some way reminds me of the accident of Isaac Galvez in Ghent a few years ago in that the real injustice is that it is the sort of accident that people often walk away from.

my thoughts with tyler farrar also today,
as his closest friend inconsolable,
no doubt the peloton will support him
and the leopard trek team riders -

Tragic. Ride in peace Wouter.

I was just reading something that mentioned that Wouter was also very close to Fred Nolf too, and whilst sadness is inevitable when there is a death in sport, its just such a tragedy when it happens at such a young age.
