thing about The Doors is - even if you could filter out jim morrissons piss poor attempts at faux quasi-profundities masquerading as poetry, you're still stuck with the teeth grindingly horrible dirge that is ray bloody manzereks' hammond organ to contend with.
dunno. i went though the doors (ha!)stage aged about 14 as described above by andy w. i then realised they were pretentious twaddle as you so rightly pointed out and have spend the last 20 years thinking i hated them. however, i recently heard some old stuff and was pleasantly surpised. hello, i love you and... something else i forget what but. sweet perky, fuzz-toned 60s pop nuggets. and the recording and production on stuff like riders on the storm is amazing. i'm not about to start flouncing about in a big shirt and wanking on about oedipus but it did enough to have me re-think writing off their entire catalogue.
i'm not a u2 or coldplay fan, but they don't annoy me. they don't bother me in the slightest. i just don't really care that much. even even i hardly ever come across them in the course of everyday listening. i'm currently revisiting the butthole surfers. get in!
for the record i'm a huge beatles and dylan fan but i know enough not to evangelise or try and convert anyone. often (as for the last year or two) i go though periods where i think i've heard enough beatles and dylan to last me a lifetime. i totally stop listening to both and leave them for years at a time. so far i've always come back to them with fresh ears at some point.
as for the dylan = rambling incoherant and stoned allegation, yep some of it is. *shrug.

I too like The Doors - Strange Days and Waiting for the Sun are both excellent LP's when listened to in context. Dylan has never really floated my boat, but I get why people like him - I like Neil Young in the same way I suppose.

Neil Young is Ace.

love a bit of shakey.
when tynan evenatually emerges we should have him rename this thread "The Dad Rock Thread".
although technically now it's grandad rock isn't it? coldpaly would be dad rock for most people.

The Doors recorded some great stuff, unfortunately they do get lumped in with that teenage Floyd, Hendrix, Zep pot-head phase that so many people went through... Crystal Ships on the first LP is one of my fave songs ever... Moonlight Drive, People Are Strange, Break On Through, Changeling... Also great...

i get yer point dooks - truth be told, i'll happily respect anyones musical taste so long as they can talk about it with a modicum of authority and get somewhat inflamed about it when someone disses 'em - shows character i reckon.
@ eightball: i'm curious to know what 'listened to in context' actually means, unless of course you mean 'off your tits on laudanum and lucozade'
+1 for the BHS - Hairway to Steven is facemeltingly good, and 'I saw an x-ray of a girl passing gas' is so gonna be my wedding track.

I loved Dylan till I went to see him live last year. Haven't listened to him since-the performance/music was that underwhelming and he clearly didn't really give a fuck any more. The thing I couldn't understand that all the aged, stoned ex-hippies were lapping it up and going wild for it.
Beatles, couldn't give a fuck-I was more Rolling Stones.
Doors-yeah some of it is pretentious shite but the man still had class, and songs like roadhouse blues and the end are still fucking great. Not comparable to the pretensions of Bono et al. at any rate. and lots of good performers are pretentious little shits anyway-the difference lies in having the class and skill to back it up!

Well yes, I kinda do mean listening in an 'altered state' for want of a better, equally crap expression - listening to Riders on the Storm on 200 Morning Glory seeds mushing around in my stomach really is something that I would not wanna repeat, though 'good' (crazy) at the time....
But I meant listening to an album as a whole more.....

Genius.
I used to do the same but say Venetian Snares, then actively encourage them to Youtube them.
I just did, quality.

I like some of the Stones stuff but really they have been pushing out the same old stuff for nearly 50 years...Beatles? there's so much going on in under ten years of work, I think the split came at the right time.
Achtung Baby was ok I suppose...

I'm not a fan, but I feel I have to stand up for Coldplay a bit here. It bores the shit out of me, but they are musical gods next to U2.

U2 have made some decent tracks. of course they have, it's obvious. you don't get to be as successful as they are, for as long as they have been by being as bad as some of you claim.
They may be a bit dull, but nothing like as dull as listening to a bunch of hipsters & geeks wave their superior musical taste around like a big cheesy cock in the wind.
