I can't really add anything much other than the usual:

Cycling in traffic is a social skill. Whatever happens to you in traffic is closely analogous to what might happen to you in other social situations.

People talk a lot about cyclists being vulnerable, and this is of course true in the sense that they can be physically assaulted. However, a lot of drivers are very stressed in their cars indeed. They're very much like cornered animals. Let them go. By cycling, you're probably having a much better day/morning/whatever than they are.

Most conflicts on the streets between users of vehicles are caused by disagreements about the 'right' to enter a given space first. It's not worth your while to get involved in squabbles like that, especially with motorists whom you are going to overtake again, anyway, just a short way down the street, when they get stuck in queuing traffic again. Hang back. Be patient. Enjoy looking around. Leave home early enough to take some extra minutes. It can all be done.

I can predict pretty much anything that will happen near me just by looking around, and accordingly I rarely get surprised. It's not rocket science and I'd happily demonstrate and explain.

Cycling cannot be compared with American revolutionary activity. It is a means of transport; a form of exercise; a way of having fun and of socialising. Riding back from the Herne Hill meeting last night I was wrapped up in the pure pleasure of riding. But that pleasure is not something that I would give my life for. I want to stay alive to enjoy it.

Sadly James is acting is a way that may make him a protomartyr of cycling. It simply isn't worth it. He is more use alive.
