Carbon road wheels?

  • that may be so - but most of us just buy deep v's to satisfy that. Fuck having carbon rims on London's potholes! It's about to be winter too, you'll ruin them in a couple of months just from water and grit - even if you don't break them..

carbon wheels are pretty much the last thing I would EVER want to buy for an about town fixed gear

Velocio fucked his carbon clincher Edge rim on a pothole within months of his Robin Mather being delivered.

No he didn't but he thought he had

  • I think any benefit from them depends on what kind of riding you do. £800 carbon deep aero wheels are probably a good idea for racing/TT'ing, but for ordinary weekend rides I'd be tempted to go for something handbuilt (record/dura ace to open pros would be classic) and spend the rest on nice road shoes and rapha (if you're so inclined).

  • still - who commutes on carbon rims?

more to the point - are you ever going to be able to lock it up anywhere?!

  • Steel wheels on a Carbon frame - worth it?

Got a little money to burn,
thought about putting a set of steel wheels on my fixie carbon fame

interested in views on whether it's worth the expense?

    will I notice any difference?

i can't make up my own mind so i'm asking you lot.

  • Why would a wheel that makes me go faster for a race not be a good idea for a 'ordinary' weekends riding in surrey?

  • Bearing in mind that you'll probably never being going fast on your fixer (aerodynamically speaking), you mostly WON'T be getting aero benefits- if you want to spend money, why not get some lighter (rimmed) wheels which you will feel every time you kick away from the lights.
    My 2p......

  • Aero benefit 60-90 seconds over 25 miles @ 25mph average speed for £500> handbuilts or something like RS80s.

You'd probably enjoy a lighter wheel more than an aero one for lumpy riding.

  • Problem with full carbon clinchers is if you flat explosively and are unable to stop quickly your v. expensive Enve rims will be at high risk of serious damage.

Seeing Dura Ace C50 CL rim spares being sold separately on Ebay would possibly lead me to ask a shop/wheel builder whether they could rustle something up with something like custom drilled Royce hubs

I wouldn't bother with that really. Get a set of these and some Mack/Goldtec/Royce track hubs and build up with CX Rays and Alloy nips.

Cost you fuck loads less than ENVE 65's or those DA rimmers.

  • You can always try riding your bicycle instead of spending money on it.

  • Scherrit

    You do not understand hipsters

It's not about functional difference, just about sick to the power of rad modifications that no one else has to establish you individuality/ability to fly in the face of common sense or attractive aesthetics.

I would suggest carbon discs for this reason.

  • That rim is just a Kysirium rim with a carbon fairing.

    YYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Front and back, with a 30mm stem and risers cut to 18cm. Would offer a exciting ride in the coming autum breezes.

  • Save some more and get the SLR's

  • I've logged on after checking the status of my bladded spoke order. So I can get lacing my 48mm carbon clinchers. [/hypocrit]

let those who are without sin cast the first stone

  • i have seen ed riding his bike

ha, i was just looking for them, not too expensive should you break them

  • i have seen ed riding his bike

I was referring to the not spending money on your bike when he changes bikes and parts even more often than I do!

  • Just like all the others drawn to this thread, I'm considering a pair of deep section carbon bling wheels. Practicality of clincher, smooth looks of no aluminium braking surface. But I've already seen one pair of DT RRCs knackered through a spot of hot alpine descending, and am guessing this kind of drawback is universal. A shame, but I'm not quite deterred.
What other manufacturer offerings are there? (no ebay/direct from china rims please). Also, how deep is too deep for fair weather riding? (these will be for a super fair weather bike)

    1. DT Swiss RRC
  • Get tubs.

    What's your budget?

well I nearly had my 58mm deep Zipp blown out from underneath me while riding in a side wind. So nothing over that I would say.

Somewhere between 1-1.5k I guess (So no super sexy Cosmic Carbone Ultimates for me)

Will be running Shimano if that makes a difference in considerations.

I find my 54mm hed3 a little sketchy over Waterloo bridge, but not blown-away awful. Tend not to use it if the wind is looking silly though.

  • FFWD F5R Tubs

  • Prompt and efficient service, merci beacoup.

  • Sigma Sport in Kingston are selling off their FFWD stock at reduced prices at the moment.
