  • gigantex 50mm's on royce/tune/PMP/dt/chris king from wheelsmith.co.uk

(gigantex make rims for other manufacturers like shimano)

  • ^good shout

I'd go for the King's out of that lot, if you wan them light try the R45 hubs. 20 hole radial front, 24 rear 2 cross/radial (ds)

  • i would go for dt/PMP/tune.
i hate the buzz of kings on the road. not keen on the servicing regime either.

(i have mega loud hubs for off-road, but i like to creep up on people on road and not let them know i'm having an easy time of it)

  • FFWD are another Gigantex made rim assembled in Hollandland? Same as PX

  • Yes. But they do different rim depths, which wheelsmith and PX don't carry.

  • you can stay upright crossing bridges in windy weather with these. check the numbers , stiffest wheels in the test results:

For 2011 FFWD have got a new rim supplier, quality supposed to be way better!

Want, want, want, want. Anyone know if you can easily swap freehub bodies on wheels like these?

  • Aren't they just a pair of Ksyriums with a carbon fairing added?

If you're going to get carbon wheels then don't fanny around with clinchers or carbon faired wheels, just bite the bullet and go for tubs.

  • Way over priced, for £500 more get the Ultimates. Andy is right, just a kysrium with carbon fairing and carbon clinchers being whack.

  • A guy at my work got them and I was pretty unimpressed with them, they do seem very cobbled together. I was telling him to get tubs but he said they would be to much hastle, it then took him 2 hrs to get clinchers on those.

Is it OK to tape tubs on for the road or is it still best to glue?

  • Tape is fine for road use. I always glue for track and cross though.

  • Glue.

    You can't sniff tape...

They aren't carbon clinchers, the braking surface is aluminium with some kind of coating on them. I've seen two Lightweight wheels (one clincher one tub) fail this year and personally experienced the beyond alarming grab of overheating carbon rims on long, wet descents I'd rather go for an aluminium braking surface and the convenience of clinchers.

  • Every component fails, citing 2 failures of Lightweights doesn't make them a bad product.

    Each to their own though.

Braking + Descending = Scaredy Cat

I'm not claiming they are, having not ridden a pair I'm in no position to comment but guiding in the Pyrenees this year tells me that they're definitely not wheels that brake-happy freds should use...

Descending - braking in the mountains =

  • Tom, I've ordered the Gigantex Ultralite rims with Royce Hubs and CX ray spokes from Wheelsmith.co.uk

You can try them out if you want, and can be bothered to put a shimano cassette on there (I'm using SRAM).

Descending - braking in the mountains =

    a) he was probably so off his tits on drugs he'd lost all sense of control
    b) it was pissing down
    c) the corner where he went over the edge creeps up on you and is far tighter than anything else on the descent
    d) he wasn't actually using carbon rims, but aluminium ones

  • e) he learnt to ride on a forum event

code oct15 will get you 15% off til the end of the month, if anyone's looking at a pair.

  • Commuter bike?

  • you like the cane creek ones - ugly as sin but just buy them

  • None. Stick with proper wheels and utfs.

  • looking for carbons rims or wheels,

recently purchase a hed3 front from ebay

but want to get another carbon clincher

    thanks

    DT Swiss Aerolite spokes.

    (191g)

Front 20 spoke, radial lacing. 650g.
    Rear 16 3x DS, 8 1x NDS (needs 32 hole hub, with 24 hole rim). 800g.

That may not be the lightest wheelset for your money. But the spoke pattern, and the increased spoke tension allowed by the alu reinforcement, should give a seriously stiff wheelset. The 50mm profile and the bladed spokes should make them pretty aero, and the enhanced braking surface will allow you to decend quicker.

Its what I would have done if budget had allowed.
