How am I to know what the road looked like? You said "fairly twisty forest road" which to me sounds like a narrow lane. I've not seen many dual carriage ways called twisty forest roads.

Okay, yes I suppose many peoples image of a twisty forest road may be a narrow lane. There are twisty forest road all over the forest and a high proportion of them are two lanes wide.

So to be clear - it was a two lane road with a couple of 35 degree bends in it.

bit late to the party, but in the Highway code excerpt
"You MUST NOT use your horn",
"except when another road user poses a danger" refers only to the previous two proscriptions:
"while stationary on the road" and
"when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am"

It does not ban you from using your horn whilst moving, and outside of those hours, for the purpose of "letting other road users know you are there".

Common sense not to use the whole road going into a **blind **corner. Pack fail.
