I've been driving in the New Forest and suddenly found myself in the middle of a stampede of ponies, which made things exciting.

They were on both sides of the road.

Most people who drive in the New Forest are well aware of the dangers posed by packs of ponies failing to follow the highway code.

So I think the time has passed.

Even a solo rider might use either side of the road, depending on just how deep the potholes are and what shit is strewn over it.
