Yeah, but if we're going to acknowledge the male-dominated (and frequently sexist and misogynist) nature of the community by creating a sanctuary for the females to come together and build a strong sub-community to help address this imbalance... then it would be good not to have reinforced those sexist views with the label "ladies".
But then, what do I know?

Ah, the ladies/women/females/girls/etc debate...
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet." -

Yeah, I know. I'll definitely keep out of this one. Especially as I've just started it.

"Ladies" is acceptable in the same way that "gents" is acceptable. Fine on the lavatory doors of faux-historic pubs in Bexleyheath, but not otherwise.

"Bints", however, is a great word and much underused and undervalued. It has taken on derogatory undertones which are not deserved. It is merely London for female of the human species.

I often refer to women as ladies. Not to address them directly, but e.g "I met a lady who owned a lovely bicycle" etc. Yet I have been ridiculed here for being overly PC in my reactions to percieved misogyny in the memes thread among others. I am now confused. Lady is misogynistic?
Yeah, but if we're going to acknowledge the gentleman-dominated (and frequently sexist and misogynist) nature of the community by creating a sanctuary for the females

Girls is only to be used for young'uns right?
"That's right Jimmy, I've brought the girls back to the house, they're 'waiting' for you"

Interesting to consider the respective uses of "chap" and "bloke".
Are either derogatory?

• #12635
I would take umbrage at being called a "guy".

Are either derogatory?
AFAIK they have never been used as a derogatory, whether the female equative were used as a derogatory.
"ooh gents, gents, flaunt your bum, give us your number gents!"

I think you're being purposefully difficult cliveo... who would've thought it!
The word "lady" generally came from the status of her husband, being that of a gentleman or lord.
There are no words that represent men that originate from the status or activity of his wife, with perhaps the sole exception of "cuckold".
It's extremely difficult to apply the antonym of these words and achieve the same effect considering men haven't been owned by women, or deprived of rights because of their gender.
I really did want to avoid the debate... but it has always struck me as somewhat odd that the name "LFGSS Ladies" was chosen, and I have always wondered whether it would be revisited.
It's totally their decision though.

Surely using "woman" is then also sexist, in the exactly the same way, as the word's etymology comes from "wife of man"

Also, if we change it now then we'll have to throw away all those jerseys.

You're making up your own etymology there.
Woman has never meant "wife of man".
wifmann, in old English (which is the source of the word) literally means female human.

This is a road that leads ultimately to shehe and herm. That old Jewish/Irish comedy act.
