1 in 10 seems a fairly conservative ratio to me. And a lot of them are to friends who know it is a joke and whose rep ranking is not in peril.
Also, presumably, the 9 positives I give for every neg are also biasing people's rep - with whatever effect that positive rep has on the classifieds?

If I recall correctly we used to have a green "pip" under the member name on the left, one to four depending on how well you had done at posting funny pictures etc.

So all I have to do is hand out like 120 negs and I make the top 5?

I don't recall there being any choice involved, it was removed due to people being unhappy about it I think.
