The hydraulic are a closed system, once bled, you can just forget about it with the occasional pads check.

If we say that yes, it makes them lower maintenance then that probably also means less prone to failure as if they don't need so much maintenance then chances are they are getting the little maintenance they do require where as a cable brake that requires more maintenance might not be getting it and therefor, is more likely to fail.

See when you put it like that it's fairly obvious, but I didn't really manage to make the jump myself!

And it's daft that I don't apply the same level of scrutiny to cars, for example. I have never (or ever known of an acquaintance) experienced a sudden, catastrophic failure of brakes on a car. Small leaks that are caught by an MOT or service, sure. But that's the infrequent maintenance you mentioned.

I've done 3000 miles (wet) on my hydraulic levers. Only thing I've done is clean the brake pads.

If you're not getting hydro discs your a plumb.

And that's from someone who toured on cables!

Get Trp spyres, 100 quid for both ends, cable discs, excellent modulation and stopping power. Love em.

Spyres are overrated... OK on an OTP, but you might as well get hydraulics if you are building a new bike.

That 1st one the dog doesn't look too happy but it's made up for by the happy dog in the 2nd pic.

We carrier our Molly in a trailer on the back of the tandem.... not far off the length of my Saab 9-5 estate :)

TRP Hylex is the cheapest road going hydraulic you can get and they're great (use standard shimano pads a bonus).

I will never be as cool as this guy...
