Your red one is very lovely, nev.
Thanks mate! I'm actually just selling it to my brother. I couldn't justify having 3 ( or actually 4 as I have a unit too, but im selling it too). But i really wanted to keep the lava dome cos I bought it new and the Kilauea is just so much fun I love it!

Nice! Did you ride there on it?
nope, but am considering setting it up for touring.
Problems include- can I carry a load on a suspension fork? Can I be arsed to carry a second set of tyres if I arrive somewhere and want to serious off-road? Have I got the money to replace the drive, bb, hubs, shifters etc etc (all ten years old, wouldnt want to take it very far from home in current state)The main problem is I already have a fully functioning cross/touring bike.

I want to get one of those for my Ogre. Don't need it till the Spring though.
Pretty good price at Spa Cycles.

Helpful guys too.
How's the ogre working out for you? I would love one. The best off road tourer/all round mtb I think.

^ Working out great so far.
http://www.lfgss.com/thread90254.html
I've only used it for short 2 hour play rides so far, but it's very comfortable & seems to ride a lot lighter than I imagined. When I first saw it, I was reminded about what drew me into riding off road in the first place. Just going out exploring & riding wherever I liked.

does anyone on this thread have mtb tires fitted to their surly lht?
i want to do the cambrian way 100 mile trail through wales in the next couple of months. they did it on an lht with mtb tires in a cycling plus issue a few months back, and it looked fantastic.
i'm trying to work out what tires I should get. at the moment it has 32c conti touring plus on it., and sks guards.

^^That's fucking lovely, it looks like it just rolled out the factory.
On the subject of racks, the simple tubus ones are nice. The only thing i'd say is don't put too much weight on it as it will snap the rear dropouts. The reason my Kona ^^^^^is now my town bike is for exactly that reason. I did have it built up as a tourer and i've snapped it twice (below as a tourer).
and just on a "I love Kona's thing" here is the rest of the kona stable.Don't tubus come with a lifetime warranty?

^^ I've got these on my trucker.
38c Schwalbe marathon cross. Still some room under the sks guards, so I should think there's room for a 40c without them. Bit of a semi slick really, so can cope with mild trails if you run slightly lower pressure.

That looks boss. What's an estimated time to do that in on an MTB?

Was it a 700c or 26" version?

It wasn't the rack that snapped, it was the driveside rear dropout. same place both times. Ted welded it up for me and it's ok again.
It snapped because the dropouts on old kona's are on the weedy side, add to that the fairly small circumference of the tubes of the rear triangle and the fact that it's fairly compact and you get a lot twisting at the back under load.
the yellow Kilauea on the other hand has chunky cast dropouts and rear stays that have the same circumference at the bottom as they do at the top making the flex is negligible. -

This looks great, if I can convince the good lady to do it with me then I may well do it spring next year.

@bare... 700c - thanks for the info - it might need 40s if the weather sets in
@doppel / @nev... record is just over 9 hours, but most people do it over 3 days! i'll aim for two days i think, try and do it in a weekend. it looks totally awesome. i don't know if you can find the feature on bikeradar, sometimes they upload them from the mags. i've been hoping to do it since first reading about it

also i'll put the date that i'm tackling it on here when we've fixed it - prob be me and @gussio and another mate who just finished cycling across Iceland. i have zero experience of rides like this so it will be useful to go with those guys, who have both done similar before. when i do that, if anyone wants to join let me know. might be mid october, or it will be spring i guess. thinking early train out west (or drive) and ride into the night a bit, stop / sleep, ride all day sat, camp, finish ride on sunday and then train back. would be nice to do it in slower time but no holiday left!

That's quite nice, with the D-lock holder. But I do think that much weight cantilevered off the bars might start twisting round.
Quite like that the Copenhagen one can be used with struts down to the front axle so that the weight goes straight down.

If you've got a quill stem I can recommend one of these (unfortunately it wont work with an ahead stem).
I use mine with a dry sack and one bungee cord.

You got link?
It is a 90mm, so not too short. Just looks that way on a big frame.
