I changed from bb5 to bb7.
Power are noticeable due to ease of set-up.

I have buget tektro jobbies on the long bike. But I have them wired to speed dial 7 levers. You can adjust both reach and gain. So its simply a case of setting the reach to hand size, the stationary pad to a hair from the disc, and then dialing in the gain untill the pull bottoms out just before the lever hits the bars.
Together with the 203mm front, and 180mm rear rotors. They feel like they would stop a truck. Which is what I'll need with 85kg of me, 24kg of Minifurry 1, 16kg of Minifurry 2, 15kg of baggage, and 16kg of bike, to stop.

The weight of both bike and baggage is conservative. Probably over 160.
My rock solid, top of the range, bike stand, is currently twisting under the weight.

Your going to have legs like tree trunks before long

Only if he decided to ride it like his BeeMC.

Should be easier than a broken overloaded trailer. The axle attachment was buggered and pulled the rear wheel to one side. So untill I get the longbike finished I'm dragging 150kg around with my rear brake on half the time.

Pushing a single speed child carrying bike up a hill daily has done my slim thigh masterplan no favours. I keep getting smaller chainrings but I still end up grinding. Kid getting heavier or I'm getting unfitter, or both.

i am getting very tempted to hit go on the bike, i like the rim upgrade suggestion.
i may ask if i can offset the cost by supplying the headset - i have a chris king in the parts bin.
would rather stick with shimano
but i could possibly save myself approx £400 quid by using up the parts available, getting a set of hope hoops/stans wheels... and would then have my handlebars, stem, seatpost of choice

The reason I questioned your choice of material is that I was under the impression that this CX bike is going to be your everyday bike, something that work effortlessly, strong and does the job.
While ti is undoubtedly a great material for those who want it, it does sound a little OTT for such job (but then all our bike are).

The rims are roughly the same price as Open sports. I'd try it on as a deal sweetner. For me the added width without any weight penalty is a no brainer. These, with XT hubs, are going to be a nice reliable wheelset.

I really like this. Reminds me of:

i am not sure what constitutes a functional bike for the purposes of this thread - is it any bike which will actually work if used, or is the thread for bikes with a specific use or function such as load carrying?
-
• #1892
I think comfort in use may play a part too.
-
• #1893
I understand that for some people, comfort includes a 30 cm drop from saddle to handlebar.
-
• #1894
Apparently it's
Certain bikes just don't fit in either the Porn or Anti threads but deserve appreciation for their function rather than their form.
-
• #1895
Pornworthy bikes that don't have their function compromised (by aesthetics or otherwise).
And bikes that are interesting because they're particularly fit for purpose.Maybe.
-
• #1896
I personally think load carrying or touring is the pre requisite to appear in this thread. Porn is for purity, Rat for utilitarianism and Antiporn for all our old, unwise decisions.

But something like I plan to build -
Road frame, STROOOONG wheels, 28c's, 9 speed and riser bars. Perfect for shopping, well a can of beer on route to mates house and general thrash around on. Like what non cyclists use their mtbs for
It's been built for a purpose and does that well, doesn't need 'guards or more gears cos it won't go far. (48 of a cx on the front and 28-12 on the back) sooooooo want this bike!!!

Love it, apart from the stem
great tip, so basically unless you nail the bb5 alignment you don't get the full power / feel from the brake
bb7's it is!
