Hmm, I’ve been up since six, so sorry if this sounds a bit ranty. Too little sleep.
I don’t really understand a proposition along the lines of “I don’t like reggae”. It’s a bit like saying “I don’t like guitar music”. What? All guitar music, or 60s, 70s, 90s, Hair Metal, Carl Perkins? As a genre it has too many years of types, divisions, off shoots for you to be able to say such a definitive statement.
I like some reggae, not all, but as Skully said – it’s partly oral history, some of it is party music, some of it is protest songs.
I like it’s early DIY production values that p!ss all over anything like a ‘celebrated’ producer such as George Martin ever managed.
I like it’s appropriation of ‘white’ 60s R&B songs
I like the fact it’s spintered off into a million and one different genres.
I like the fact it makes the ladies dance.
And Niall, tell me about the uncivilised Southern Britain prior to Roman invasion? I was under the impression that we’d already accommodated and taken up Romanesque habits. Don’t give me that ‘civilisation’ rubbish and go and read some pre history. And go and look at US prison statistics and repeat that sentence about “peace, rights, privileges and opportunities”.
I’ll switch off the bleeding liberal button now.
Well said.

Truth be told most music is trite if we wanna be picky and that is across all genres. Only a few artists have great lyrics and great music.
Music is so subjective anyway that if you like something keep on liking it because there is an army of people out there who think its crap.

but you like pendulum
So? Attacking my taste will not make Dio looking any better.
I wrote it many times - I like almost any kind of music. I'm not very excited about some genres, but I'd prefer Spice Girls to an official radio of Teheran's regime.
Dio is still shit, though. Disposed in the bin of past music, like Eddy Grant and Bucks Fizz. -

Pot and Kettle mate.Ha! I've never said I don't like "heavy" rock (whatever it is). I just think, that Dio is bit weak.
And you can't compare it to the whole reggae genre. It's just too much. Lovers rock, rockers, rocksteady, ska, dub, dancehall, ragga, roots..
Some aspects of reggae, like versions, mc-ing, diy recordings are - nomen omen - the root of modern music, from punk to dance.
You take your shit far too seriously and generalise to much.
Look, there's nothing to be scared of - just some guys who want to have fun and beat the boredom of ghetto life:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqaibRC5_ck

Britain was full of the Welsh before the Romans came, every day a cacophony of male voice choirs and people with excessively short hair saying things like "there's lovely". brrrrr.
As for the US prison statistics I'd like to point out that most black americans are not in jail. I don't see your point? It's somehow our fault that those people who are in jail chose to live a life of crime instead of a life of hard work?

Perhaps because his grand parents were stolen from Ghana or Benin and RP English wasn't really the language spoken at home? :-)
And again, I know it's not to everyone's taste, but a sentence *"Reggae is shit, because it's about sufferation inna ghetto" * is wrong by default and your argument isn't valid anymore.

I like reggae. Few of us in the UK - a nation of immigrants since the year dot - now speak our original languages, including those of the 'home countries'. However, the majority learn to spell it properly. It aids communication...
