  • Why buy that why you can get PX's offering with force for the same price?

It's all Apex on that Planet X except the shifters and mechs. Which is odd because the Apex mechs would probably be better for audax riding. The long cage Apex rear mech gives you the gear range of a triple (Force doesn't) when running it with the Apex chainset.

I'm not sure the Planet X can run 28s with guards either.

No rack mounts, and less clearance on the PX.

Then add what miro said here.

  • I've been hmming and ahhing about road bike, proper road bike, and the Pinnacle Evaporite seemed to ticked the box.

Ed look at geometry, and fuck wether C+ say its vertically compliant or not. Open mould is fine, could still be a great frame, and you have pinnicles garantee on it.

  • open mould is good. Keeps the costs down. Do you want a bike with Tiagra? And it could really do with some new wheels.

    ftfy

  • Will replaced the crankset with Ultegra ASAP if I go for it.

There's no BB30 Ultegra crankset - that's one of the reasons why all these OTP bikes come with those FSA Gossamer cranks in the first place.

  • Ed, will this bike genuinely fit you?

Each bike you buy seems to not fit, you have it for 1-3 months and then flog it because of poor fit.

If it is the right size/geo for you then buy it and ride it. If not, don't bother and find one that is right for you or get one built.

  • likely so, I ridden the 54cm one (170mm headtube), it fit nicely, but ordered the 51cm (with deposit) and see how that ride.

I only ordered it to try out though.

Regal, in that case, SRAM Red BB30 one it is.

  • Why are you changing the chainset?

  • Frankly, not keen on the FSA.

  • Is it the shifting? Is it the look? Is it the weight?

Or is it after you've read a few things on the internet?

  • just personal preference really, like how people go for Thomson stem/seatpost over everything.

  • I know FSA is seen as not very exotic but SRAM chainsets aren't much of an upgrade.

Shimano Ultegra and DA chainsets are really good and should give sweet shifting because the rings are so rigid. They need an adapter as they aren't BB30 native but if it gives completes the groupset – I'd go for that. Or not bother.

Too much time spent on teh webz etc?

    ;-)

  • Hence why I'm going for Ultegra, I though SRAM Red is pretty good, the groupset is 105, but the Ultegra crankset would be a better choice than a 105.

  • Red chainset matched with 105 shifters would work just fine but makes no sense to me and makes me feel a bit ill (joking really). You shouldn't mix your drinks!

105 is good and significantly less cash. The shifting when giving it beans might not be as sweet as Ultegra but still super slick. 105 will be heavier than Red, that's the only downside.

  • Red is good but the rings are flexy as fuck. This is only noticeable when shifting under load (which you should be avoiding anyway)

  • I'd go for the Ultegra equipped version but it's £300 more than the 105, and personally, the 105 is pretty good as it is, especially when it's £115 more than a Tiagra equipped one (whom I really disliked the brake shifter).

mix and match is always good providing it work well with each other, e.g. 10spd 105 derailleur with 8 speed cassette.

I like Ultegra. It might seem expensive next to 105, but it's a bargain compared to DA. Spending money on the parts that last (everything except the chain and cassette really) is a good investment.

Why? So you feel like you invented your bicycle?

    Perhaps put canti-mounts on it?

  • Not really, just for quality and reliability.

  • 105 then. Unless that matches too much.

  • Didn't you says that the Ultegra crankset shift better because the ring is a lots stiffer?

I get them at trade price, so it's worth going for either way.

  • Do they do a BB30 Ultegra crankset, or would you have to sleeve it?

  • It's possible that they'll make their crankset BB30 compatible, so I'll just give it some time.

  • Didn't you says that the Ultegra crankset shift better because the ring is a lots stiffer?

This conversation is felling rather circular.

Shift quality of Ultegra over 105 is not much, if anything (everything else is 105 on the mentioned model). As mentioned it'll be better than SRAM.

If you just want quality and durability then 105 does this completely.

If you want to save weight then go for the next model up with Ultegra, and switch to Ultegra cranks if it comes with FSA.

Do they do a BB30 Ultegra crankset, or would you have to sleeve it?

    Yes.

  • Yes they do, or yes he'd have to sleeve it?
