I once lost four stone in six months. From 18 and a half to 14 and a half stone. After a while a really got into it and thrived on the shrinking feeling and clothes hanging off me. Suddenly the weight loss stopped. I stayed thin for quite a while, put on a bit, lost it again, up and down over a decade and then really put on weight this year. Losing weight, once I get going, is easy and fun. The euphoria of apparent weight loss far out reaches the pain of the hunger. It's starting that I find hard.

I've not felt hungry at all- just cut out booze and lifted things up, then put them down again whilst listening to the dulcet tones of Shakira singing "when'er, when'er" repeatedly.

Ah, the 'zone'... The being in of which involves feeling secretly horrified and repelled by strangers happily eating muffins in starbucks.

I think this is a sliding scale. Being lean at the outset of weight loss pushes you into the wasting away category. It hurt; all day and all night. The only euphoria involved some MDMA at a party midway through the 6kg.
@J - 'Old St', you say. WhoTF would want to live there?

If I had to listen to Shakira 6 times a week, I would vomit the 2.5 extra stone cliveo is currently carrying.

I hear that it is well trendy and now has a cycling café.

That would involve throwing up half of your vital organs and a leg. Listen to the Velvet Underground instead. I have never vomited listening to them.

Old street: I'm sure it's nice but it's not really by choice. I had the chance of a flat through a friend which was much cheaper than anything else for various reasons. It's lovely but very unlike me. It is very trendy. I am going to be living in a 'loft', with no walls, and weird white umbrellas all over it. I am very excited nevertheless. I will have to up my game and buy some sort of interesting trousers.

Old street: It's nice and has a real cool vibe and it was my first choice. I had the chance of a flat through a friend in the media which was much trendier than anything else for various reasons which most people wouldn't understand. It's lovely, just like me and my wonderful vibrant life. It is very very trendy in a po-mo way. I am going to be living the life I have always dreamed of in a 'loft', with no walls, and weird white umbrellas all over it. I am very pleased with myself. I will have to up my game and buy some sort of interesting new friends.

If lighter I could climb hills more easily and see my penis more frequently.
To be honest Clive I can get up hills fairly quickly and see my penis on a regular basis (even if we are not quite on speaking terms these days) but I still feel there has to be more to life than this.

I am also not young and do not have the time available during a regular working week to do all that I would love to do.
Give up your job and become a full time cycling "bum" ?

I've got the bug back now. I've decided to cap my calories at around 1000 - 1200 (at a reasonable guess) and am slowly bringing some exercise back in after the quacks gave my knee the all clear.
So long as you're reasonably active it's a very simple personal dilemma. You just have to ask yourself the question "what do I want more? To lose weight or to eat that pie". If it's pie then eat the pie. If it's lose weight, don't eat the fucking pie.
Working in an office, I've never seen or heard of (over and over and over) more fad diets in my life. I swear one claimed to lose 10lbs in 3 days, "i'm only allowed 3 dry crackers and a black coffee" "i've gotta fit into a bikini by Tuesday" "i can have chocolate cos it's Thursday and the moon counter acts the sugar" that sort of bullshit. Then they go out and get smashed on lambrini or whatever it is they drink in Kent.
(Hullo, S. Moving back to London on 1st Sept -- Old Street. Hope you're well!)
