  • i find walking good for loosing a bit of weight. it doesn't make you feel hungry like cyling and because its low intejsity you burn fat as a fuel source instead of carbs with high intensity cycling/running.

i also stop eating a meal when full and don't feel obligued to clear every plate.

  • i feel your pain fellow fatties!

i'm on a mission to lose the love handles and belly island (as it is cruelly referred to my the missus when i'm reclining in a bath) i've sprouted since finishing training for my swim in april. i went on a beery bender for a couple of months which was the main cause i'd say. that and the drastically reduced commute.

am trying to deal with it by swimming more, bi-weekly wheezes round the block and taking detours and long after work rides.also trying to manage portions better, cut out some carbs (like not always having bread or potatoes with meat and/or veg dishes) and keeping an eye on the schoolnight tinnies.

seems to be working... very slowly.

oh and staying away from crisps and biscuits. they are occasional treats now rather than daily occurances. sucks though as i love my food, a carb junky, and quite prone to balooning up if i don't feep an eye on it.

  • That's totally not true, Tommy, you can easily drop 2 lb per week at a healthy level. Carbs are a big source of issues, try different kinds of carbs, and eating them in a specific way, i.e., not late at night, not overloading without exercising afterwards. I think 6 servings per day is overloading. I can tell when I have carbs primarily making up breakfast and lunch, no matter how much water I drink, I feel like shit.

Could you explain how this works please. I would genuinely like to know how this works. We are a machine and if energy in = C_1, i.e calories in and energy out = C_2, i.e output / exercise if you don't alter one of these such that C_2 > C_1 how will you loose weight? I understand that diffrent foods will cause sugar spikes, craving e.t.c but if your weight is stable then C_1 = C_2. You can change fat into muscle but I always thought muscle weighs more than fat.

  • Booze is the killer; and not knowing when to put down the Haribo.

    this.^
the problem with people who go on a fitness binge is that the body reacts to the sudden increase in activity by going into crisis mode which makes you eat more, when i started cycling i was eating a second breakfast before going to bed after a massive evening meal. you soon wean yourself of it though.

i see a lot of these weight loss threads on cycling forums where people say they are exercising etc and eating sensibly but often they aren't. often they eat crap high gi foods (white bread/potatoes) and fatty/sugary snacks plus the booze.

i guess there are specific ways to 'burn fat' but eat better and exercise the right way is a good place to start.
would be interested to know the expert opinion on how to lose fat and how people perceive their efforts. both in intensity and time spent exercising?
when doing my midweek laps of the park i see a lot of people noodling around and a lot less actually pushing themselves.
dunno how important that is just an observation.

  • This is a good website for tracking what goes in and what you burn....
    http://www.foodfocus.co.uk/
Cut out booze. I did it for Feb and lost 5kg without trying (bought a new bike with what I would have spent on booze in a month).... Without booze you train more cause you want to avoid the pub. That and you can't pull 'too hungover to train card' out. (Though I think training on a hangover is a good thing - challenge the body and all that.)
Don't cut out carbs - if you do when you go to train you'll manage 20 mins or so then just run out of energy.

  • I'm tee total and only started to get fat when I stopped drinking and smoking 20 years ago.

  • loose weight = energy out > energy in

  • Exactement. When did you stop exercise, Clive? That would have had something to do with it. Obviously, booze will exacerbate the effect of no/little exercise.

    smokes are appetite surpressant

  • Weight training. Squats and deadlifts.

    Losing weight is for girls.

  • smokes are appetite surpressant

and they make you look cool and get chicks.

  • Yeah don't cut out the carbs - carbo loading is still valid is it not, pre-training?

  • Long rides - 3 hours plus at 140bpm plus 2 x per week. Sorted.

  • Right, so I've gotten pretty fat.

I ideally want to drop about a stone and a half.........

H, seriously, you think you're fat? What's your height and what's your weight?

I'm about 5'9" and 18-19 stone. I don't worry about it. Doctor says I should go down to 11 stone. Mentally I laughed at him, because even though I'm an asthmatic fatty, I'm sure there are certain essential physical activities that I'd beat many people for dead at. I'm quite proud of what I can do, and I get complimented often. Okay, we won't go there. No need for me to be crude or vainglorious.

My chest is 54" and my waist is 48". I could be loads healthier, but I'm happy person, and I can do the things I want to do, and like to do, very well thank you.

Good luck with the weight loss, seriously. But tubby and fat, aren't the same at all. I'm fat, strong and confident. I'm not advocating fat, but I wonder if a size 30 waist is right for everybody........

  • If you take in more calories than you use you will gain weight and vice versa, yes? It is that simple isn't it?
As far as I know there are no recorded examples of people on hunger strike *gaining *weight, even during the initial stages.
The only couriers I have ever know who were fat were also very heavy drinkers.
The only reason weight loss has been made so complex and in need of 'expert' advice is so that those 'experts' can make money.
There are certain natural variations amongst people in weight/body fat. But if you have put on a noticeable amount of weight in a short period then the reason is you have either eaten a lot more (or started eating food with more calories in it) or you have taken less exercise. Do the opposite and you will lose weight.

  • I preferred my answer, and I say that with no bias at all.

    serious face

  • There was a report recently that said up to you are 40, being fat or thin made no difference to your health... apparently it's after that it goes downhill ...

  • mind, things read on the interwebs, generally should be ignored / mocked / deleted

Dale, you and Henry both should know that when you burn fats as a fuel source you create ketones. Not good! But I guess the fat has to go somewhere, so it's being burnt one way or another.

But ugh. I feel so much more tired when I walk than when I ride my bike!

  • what does fat actually do? is it there in case a famine comes along?
you would have thought evolution would have got rid of it along with nipples on men.

  • The more muscle you have, the more you can eat without getting fat. Do cardio, but don't neglect to weight train like a lot of people do. If you just do cardio exercise like bike riding, your weight is more likely to fluctuate, ime. Henry come down to the outdoor gym in Regents Park with me some time.

It is not just 1+1=2, it's how the body processes food and when it slows down in processing food. But you acted as though losing a stone or two in several months was batshit crazy and I'm saying that it's not. 2x4=8x3=24. 2 lbs per week weight loss is healthy and sustainable. Anything over that done for longer than about one month without a serious plan dealt with by a doctor and/or nutritionist is bordering on fad diet that probably won't stick around long term.

But for instance, I ride my bike at least 15 miles, up two hills each way, at least 5 days per week, yet I don't have flat abs b/c a) I'm genetically predisposed to this (I've always had a little belly, even if before it didn't stick out this much), and b) I eat too many carbs at the wrong times, including alcohol. It ain't rocket science.

fat is energy storage. it's why I call my belly my battery pack.

  • bring yourwhole self to inner/ outer balance.

that's not the case for ectomorphs such as myself.
muscle is hard to gain yet we can eat as much as a endomorph without much fluctuation in weight.
