That's only important for frozen foods.

Anyone able to reccommend a calorie counting app?
it's pretty easy to keep track of when I'm only having three meals a day (and the same breakfast everyday) but it would still be useful.
One that let's me add in each ingredient as I put it into the pan would be useful for dinner...
Good Calorie counting app is Daily Plate!

I'm starting to worry that I'm turning into a spokesperson for them, but it works and is really good. You can set goals and track them. Plus the food database is huge.

Are the scales which pass a current through your body via your feet just foo foo, or worthwhile/accurate at all?
bioimpedance does work, but depends on hydration status. good as an indicator, but calipers are better, maybe take a local gym up on a free fitness assessment ;)

The important thing is not to eat any carbs in the evening. Or morning. A carb at lunch is ok but only a small one.
Water - good water, not tap water which is loaded with added Kcals - should never be consumed with food but it is ok to enjoy a glass of your own urine with your carb at lunch.
Hot food is bad for you. Cold food is worse. Food should be tepid. Tepid carb and lukewarm protein should form 90% of your diet. The other 10% should be thrown away.
Above all though you should worry and fret about your food. Do not enjoy it. Do not use your common sense (Experiments have proved that using common sense actually decreases the body's metabolic rate).
Every day you must look in the mirror and say "I am fat. I am disgusting. I am a tub of wobbling horse shit". The tears you will then start to cry are simply obese molecules leaving your system. It's all starting to make so much sense!

As a side note did anyone watch the "Children of the Chinese Circus?" The childrens strength to weight ratio is amazing! The feats they perform are almost enough to take your mind of the brutal treatment they receive from their teachers!

the scales at the gym put me at a stone lighter than the scales at home....

(am not trying to lose weight - and going to the boring gym for rehab purposes)

I get this, it seems to be a combination of weight of clothing and scale accuracy. The scales at the gym are usually much better than home ones.

Indeed, saw that a few years ago and noticed it was being repeated. Felt so sorry for that poor kid. Big weight on his shoulders being yelled at so much, having to translate it all to his deaf parents and having no siblings to share anything with.

It's his thin twin.

I havn't read this whole thread so forgive me if someone has said this already, but High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is an extremely effective and time efficient way of losing weight. Basically instead of doing a long slow session of cardio, you do a series of short cycles of maximum exertion exercise (e.g. sprinting or on an exercise bike) with rest periods in between. An example would be sprinting for one minute, then resting for 75 seconds and repeating this 8x. Each session takes about 20 mins and if you do it 3x per week you will experience an effect equal to 5 HOURS (!!!!!) of steady state (regular) cardio. It really is very effective and is thought to work by boosting your metabolism for about a day after training so you burn more calories over all.
I really reccommend it. look at the wikipedia page and try out the Tabata or Little method.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-intensity_interval_training#Tabata_Method

Cut out the beer and all the useless carbs - not a big fan of weight training but hitting the gym will tone you up and make you feel fitter quicker!

What is meaning of toning?
The correct definition is how neurologically "awake" and ready for work muscles are. An elite weightlifter or sprinter would have very firm muscles because they are always fired up and ready to go. This type of tone comes from training maximum recruitment of muscle fibers. Either through sprint work or heavy lifting (<5reps)
Lifting weights at higher reps increases cell plasma making muscles larger and softer. Plus the muscles are never as honed and ready for maximal recruitment as someone who trains for it specifically. Which means they will have softer muscles.
The popular use of the word toning is both a wrong one and often leads to contradiction in how to achieve it.
Most people believe toning, to be related to creating muscle definition or similar. To achieve this one must either lose so much fat (and even water) that their muscles show up. OR focus on increasing weight through heavy lifting and eating till muscles are so big they begin to aesthetically dominate .
Trying to increase muscle while trying to lose weight overall is a contradiction, yet what most people attempt when "toning".

So without sounding like an idiot is it possible for you to have a very low carb diet whilst still being able to cycle big distances. Would you body not start using your fat reserves if it had no carbs to burn?

Not really - your body can't burn its own fat fast enough to keep you supplied with energy on a long ride. You need to load up the carbohydrates before, during and after if you want to ride long distances.
-

So for big rides (weekends) I should ideally carb load and keep eating the carbs on the rides.
But for commuting 20 miles each way, carbs really aren't really that important? This is mainly for weight loss and getting fitter, I can then stick to my usual diet with low carb intake which should aid weight loss.
...and not leaning.
