  • You can't eat 8-10k cal.. you're not trying hard enough clive. Embrace the feast!

And wash it down with a couple of these:

Pearoast, I know, but I don't think we can look at this one enough.

  • Where do I get one of those in London?

  • 32 fl oz. is almost a litre! Rock the fuck on!

  • i want to try one, even if it's just once.

how do those kfc things compare?

  • I wish they were available in London. I can imagine a tough ride being organised where this was drunk at the end - have to be a long, tough course to compensate.

Who am I kidding, though? Somebody would just organise a Guinness-ride style event, visiting all the London outlets where you could get one, minimum of one drink at each stop. Much more in the spirit of the forum.

  • The muscle/metabolism thing is a little overrated. There are more valuable reasons to want to hold onto muscle. Such as functional strength (which becomes more important as body detioriates with age). Better circulation of blood, and better insulin response which reduces likelyhood of diabetes and heart disease.

    is this you, bro?

  • BMI is a useful indicator for people with a sedentary lifestyle, and for fat fat fatty fatty fat fat fats. Like Dammit.
BMI is THE weight measurement monitored in people with anorexia - these are generally not fat or sedentary people. Sure, it may not be as accurate as measuring the exact fat proportion too etc but if it's what is used to gauge whether or not people need to be hospitalised/sectioned, I reckon it must be fairly useful.

I cringed a little when I used the term, xfit has tainted it. But it was the most appropriate one.

  • Are you saying hypertrophy creates extra contractile fibres?

Hypertrophy does not CREATE extra contractile fibres, the term hypertrophy describes an increase in muscle size, one mechanism which this is attributed to is the increase in density of contractile proteins. Commonly referred to as myofibrillar hypertrophy. There are other mechanisms which do not increase density of contractile proteins.

Most people will get a significant increase in contractile proteins from simply putting on more weight. Not even changing activity level. More weight = more muscle. Anyone relatively sedentary will get large amounts of myofibrillar hypertrophy from just starting something moderately strenuous like cycling, hiking, playing foot ball, swimming etc.

Muscle cells will also get larger by increase of cell fluid containing organelles like mitochondria to provide energy for the cell. This is commonly referred to as "sarcoplasmic hypertrophy".

  • Might want to edit that original post, again.

I was confused as to what you were getting at. But I think I finally figured it out.

My use of the term "fibre" right? I tend to mix it up with the contractile proteins. I just remembered, "fibre" is generally used to refer to individual muscle cells and not the stuff within it.

Hypertrophy is indeed not the term used to describe and increase in cells. That would be hyperplasia, and it is debatable whether muscle hyperplasia exists in any quantifiable way.

But an increase in in contractile proteins is generally what people are thinking when talking about increase in muscle mass, and is the thing relevant to this little dialogue.

  • Yeah I fucked up, I always think of the actual proteins as fibres even though it the actual cells which are referred to as fibres. Thanks for the correction.

  • Does anyone have tips for keeping away from the sweets at work? I don't mean the vending machines I mean the free sweets. My healthy eating is going really well but I've just had a sudden bout of eating jelly beans recently why the hell I dont know!

  • Can't help, I'm afraid.

We have a table and it always, always has some or all of:

    • cake
    • shortbread
    • pretzels
    • sweets
    • chocolate
    • fruit
    • jaffa cakes
    • biscuits
    • stuff people have baked at home

Also, we have ice lollies in the freezer and a bottomless supply of Ribena (yay!) and Vimto (boo)

  • I thought I had it bad!

Snack in a controlled way. I know some good but non-sinful muffin recipes, for instance, or you can get some of those 90 calorie cereal bars from a newsagent and have one with a cup of tea/coffee and some fruit. Have one snack mid morning, one mid afternoon. The trick is not to go hungry, but not to splurge.

  • This doesn't happen nearly enough.

Approx. weekly is plenty enough - we've even had days when multiple people have brought baking in - imagine! On the same day and everything.

This is a new management technique, I talk about it in my new book downsizing with diabetes!

Sounds good to me. I normally tend to have fruit in the morning and the same in the afternoon.

  • But while the fruit fills a hole, it's leaving you feeling unsatisfied or you wouldn't be vulnerable to the sweet treats on offer. Fruit is very virtuous but most of us have been trained to associate certain things (some cereal-based carbs some chocolate, etc.) with real food. In my experience, you can either try and maintain iron discipline (which takes a long time to master and leaves you vulnerable to binges meanwhile) or you can just train your expectations down and have enough of a little treat to keep you honest.

  • I want to work where you work.

I think we're sort of semi-constantly sort of hiring.

Oh, did I mention that the coffee's quite good too?

No cycle parking or showers though, which is a bit of a bummer

Or just run 5K in your lunchbreak

  • I did that kind of thing as well, rather than instead. But there are limitations to relying purely on exercise to lose weight; it's useful to learn to change your dietary habits, because that'll still work for you when you aren't able to exercise.

  • Fruit totally satisfies me*

    *has iron discipline though...

When you are, for example, locked in a wardrobe?
