Tell us about your weekend ride

  • It's not a weekend ride, but I wanted to share a ride that's made me really happy. This evening I took my friend for a ride up to and around Hampstead. She was really scared of hills and didn't think she'd even make it up the road from Camden to Hampstead (whatever that's called) but was an absolute trooper and stormed up everything in sight. She was so happy that I'd taken her and wants to ride more :) It's great to see the happiness that cycling can bring to people.

As an additional bonus we didn't get lost once (despite me not knowing north london and not having a map), I didn't embarrass myself on any hills (would have defeated the point of the ride I guess) and we didn't get told off for cycling on the heath.

    What a lovely evening.

  • She'll be doing the owl ride, then...?

Good stuff. It's fun getting people on bikes. I've been trying to persuade my dad to ride the cuckoo trail with me for about a year. No dice :/

  • Not the weekend but fuck it; I never get to cycle on the weekends
I couldn't be arsed doing a proper ride so just went around London a bit, I saw about 2 green lights all day. Ended with a half-hour of power but didn't have much left in my legs after stop start sprints all day.

  • Why is everyone on this forum so bastard fast?

Or maybe it is I who am slow.

Group rides vs. Solo rides or htfu vs. yourself.

  • hurry the fuck up?

I think some people are actually thinking about cycling while they cycle, while the rest of us schleps are either having 'fun' or looking at stuff.

  • hippy's rule of cycling: the faster you cycle the more cake stops you can have in a given day.

  • the only rule about cake is how much butter to bake one with, and even then it doesn't really matter.

  • Baking cake is best left to people who can bake. Eating cake is best left to me.

perfect rules for Isle of Wight sunday, at least 5 W.I led schools stops for cakemountain goodness

  • I've had two good midweek rides in and around Boston, about 30-35 miles each- which isn't very far but I had to sneak them into a long lunchbreak.
    Things I have discovered:

    1. New York is very near to Boston:

    2. There are a lot of Eurofighters at RAF Coningsby, and they keep you entertained pretty well.
    3. The road to New York is the straightest road I have ever been on (see above for some idea of ridiculous straightness)
    4. It is windy, always.
    5. I would like some hills please.

    6. And most importantly- there are almost no cars here, ever. Yesterday- after leaving the main roads I saw 5 cars. You have entire roads to play on, and it is incredible, and the road surfaces are really surprisingly good.
Also no cyclists- but I assume they have weekends to use, where as like the other Henry I don't get many weekends. Will investigate further, when I'm stuck here next weekend.

  • Winnat's Pass.

Looking at trains now for Monday, prices are VERY good. Sheffield the right station? Arriving at 09.00h and leaving at 19.27h anybody got a good route?

  • can do Sheffield, but if you wanna go straight up winnats for a little warm up then on a circuit after, get off at castleton, nearest start point. enjoy :)

  • Yeah train from Sheffield onwards to Hope I'd say. Quick coffee at the Woodbine café then along the road a bit before full gas up Winnats. Turn right or left at the top. Enjoy.

  • Or book train back from Stockport or Macclesfield and ride there from Sheff via Winnats.

Thank you everybody. That cafe sounds very good.

  • Warm out today.

  • Thank you everybody. That cafe sounds very good.

If you're just going up Winnats and back to Sheffield there's a couple of decent climbs on the way back. Either new road which starts just north of bamford or the dale from Hathersage, both of these take you to the top of Ringinglow road which is a long straight descent back in to Sheffield.

Or you could go up and down Winnats then a loop through Bradwell>Eyam>Calver and then the climb up through Froggatt.

  • Sudden idea for a go at a two-day London to Edinburgh, but yesterday evening's 'urgent' office nonsese scuppered my plan for an early night. Only a fraction into the trip, and no amount of yawning, blinking, and rubbing of eyes can conceal my being bloody tired. Must get a wriggle on.

  • ^^^ what happens when you press 'Pro' ?

  • You drop everyone and ride away solo into the rain

  • The missus is training for a triathlon (mental) so went and did a few laps of Viccy Park with her. KOM, stoked.

  • Back home for the longer weekend. About 20 miles in the heavens opened and i got soaked wearing only bibs and a jersey so i turned off earlier than intended and once i was on the way home it suddenly became gloriously sunny.

Another slight hiccup as i made my way through Downton mid Cuckoo fair - think roads closed and filled with hundreds of people and me worried about the average speed stat.
