OK, I have formalised the date now. I shall start adding details over the next month or so.

Im out sorry, have a good one.

Sorry to hear you're out m.f, maybe you'll make the next one.
In the mean time, I'm thinking of doing a scouting ride on 5th of June. It won't be tweeded, but it will be civilised. If anyone wants to come for a roll then let me know.

The weather is looking lovely for this weekend, ideal for having a roll through the Peak District. Still welcoming company for a scouting ride if anyone is up this way and can't think of anything better to do.

I'd love to come, but it's a birthday weekend in our house. Enjoy some quality miles and a pint of the good stuff for me!

Well I had an excellent day out and if I may be so bold, I think the route is pretty good. For those considering fixed or SS, I would just like to point out that this route has three major climbs. The first is gentle but quite long from the city centre up to Ringinglow and on to the end of Stanage Edge. The second is up Winnats Pass, a short but pretty gruelling climb. Many a rider will find the need to engage the Shank's gear on this climb. Finally is the ascent from Whaley Bridge to Black Hill, sharp at first but gets much easier as it goes on.
Of course, to reward you for your efforts, you will be presented with some of the most enjoyable views this country has to offer.
I found a great little coffee van that is available msost days under Stanage Edge and spotted a few good lunch places after Winnats Pass (I can only advise against eating heavily before attempting this climb).
I still need to sort out the leg from Hazel Grove to Stockport. The A6 doesn't really have much to recommend it.

Another pass of the route as far as Hazel Grove. This time with company. New lesson learnt, just before you climb out of Sheffield (there is no other way), do not have the full english breakfast. Meat sweats at Stannage Edge aren't gentlemanly.

glad our priorities are sorted
food and coffee, but where is the booze?

• #60
Don't worry James - this is Yorkshire. Cider might be poor/thin on the ground, but the ale is superb!

I'm imposing a no beer before Winnats Pass rule. (Captain Barbosa) Well not so much of a rule, more of a guideline(/Captain Barbosa).
After Winnats Pass, there is the Wanted Inn at Sparrowpit and then the Roebuck opposite the lunch stop in Chapel-en-le-Frith as well as plenty of hostelries in Whalley Bridge. After that, I feel certain that there will be libation a plenty in Stockport. I'm yet to do a scouting mission around there for the most tweedly establishment but it will be done before the ride.

Where can I get one of those engines which goes into the seat tube?
-
• #63
No need. Just sling a rope onto Dancing James' Mather and let him churn over the steep stuff.
Simples. -

A little bit of bumpage as this draws closer. I hope people are still planning on attending.
I'm hoping that people can make it to Sheffield Train Station for 10am at the latest.
-
• #65
I think I'm still good for this one - want to list the times and dates again, just to make sure people are clued up?
-
• #66
what day is the ride?
sat or sunday? as the sunday i am off to france as mechanic for tour de l'ardeche
-

The plan is that on Saturday, 4th September we will meet up at Sheffield Train Station by 10am, earlier if everyone is there before.
We'll start rolling out through Sheffield and up to Ringinglow before tracking Stanage Edge as far as Bamford and then pick up the main road into Hope for a bite to eat at the Woodbine Cafe.
After that we'll head through Castleton and up Winnats Pass before heading over to Chapel en-le Frith for lunch. Nice little cafe with a pub adjacent.
From there it's a nice rolling decent to Whalley Bridge before the final climb over Black Hill and down to Disley, along the A6 to Hazel Grove, up Ollerton road and down Marple Road into Stockport for beer, pie, maybe a little carousing. Hoping to get to Stockport by about 4pm at the latest, probably before.

Hey all, just seen this thread and might be up for coming along. Been wanting to do Sheffield/Macnhester for a while, and as a former Sheffield student and as an old Stopfordian this seems perfect for me. And of course I have tweeds...
My problem is I only have one bike, a fix. But done some long rides on it before and Always up for a challenge -

You might have to push!
Depends how many decide to do fixed, but I'm game. -

How much tweed does one need to wear for this ? Would just a cap suffice ? Parts of Winnatts are 35%, so an alternative might be over Mam Nick via Edale. Also the A6 is best avoided so after Chapel-en-le-Frith, a nicer route is A624 to Hayfield, then New Mills, Marple to Stockport.

35%
WTF
I need to check on when I am being picked up for the mechanic work in France, hoping its the sunday evening so I can get this in
though will probably have legs of jelly after this little jaunt
clearly i am a soft southerner, as i can imagine there will be pictures of hardmen of the north on original safety bikes sauntering up Winnatts
clearly gravy and yorkshire pudding is the food of champions

You can wear as little or as much tweed as you like, I would hope that everyone who comes along enters into L' esprit de corps as it were. No one will be sent home with a note to their mum.
Just about bugger all of Winnats is 35%, I think only on one corner if you hug the inside and only for a few metres. The rest is a tough 22% slog in the middle of some 10-15. Importantly, Winnats is quite short, certainly much shorter than it's supposed reputation. And I like it, so I'm leading the ride up there.
The bit of the A6 that we're doing, from Disley to Hazel Grove is admittedly fast and busy, but it is also wide, down hill and short and allows me to route the ride through the nice trundle down to Whalley Bridge, which will be well earned after traversing Winnats and supping on a pint, for those that want one.
