"How extraordinary is Ye Shiwen?
There was controversy this week after Ye Shiwen, a young Chinese swimmer, won the 400 metre individual medley in fine style. A US swimming coach called the performance "disturbing", implying that she may have cheated. More or Less investigates the numbers and finds there's no statistical smoking gun."
Some other interesting stuff about women's athletics in the 80s, as well.

We've just seen a doper win the women's 1500m (followed closely by a Turkish teammate in silver, and the Turks have previous), and a Russian doper win the hammer. Shit night in the stadium.

Is Usain Bolt on steroids?
http://www.muscleweek.com/is-usain-bolt-on-steroidsAs the article points out, it doesn't matter if he is, if he is within a 4:1 testosterone ratio. That limit is applicable to **all **the athletes, thus a fair playing ground.

Utter nonsense
Really, would you care to elaborate, or has Olympic fever left you fraught with idiocy?

To start:
- It poses a significant disadvantage to ethical athletes who have lower testosterone ratios but are rightly unwilling to manipulate their levels with banned steroids.
- Levels of response to doping vary. The impact of a 4:1 ratio is not equal across all athletes. Better 'repsonders' will therefore gain significant advantage.
- Some athletes will have naturally higher testosterone levels. Why should that natural advantage be undercut by another athlete's ability to dope up to the same level?
To take the view that ability to dope up to the same ratios 'levels the playing field' is simplistic, inconsistent with the scientific evidence, and shown to result in unfair outcomes for athletes. Or did you think that the 50% rule was a good benchmark in cycling?

^^ @T_V those are the arguments against a minimum Haematocrit level to guard against the use of EPO. Do those arguments exactly correlate to the use of these steriods or are you just blithely transposing opinions from one highly specialised subject to another?
-
• #841
It is a very fair comparison I think.
Basically having only a fixed limit or ratio with no regard to what a persons natural 'base' levels are is unfair and effectively allows the unscrupulous to freely manipulate those levels with illegal performance enhancing drugs provided they stay below the arbitrary limits.

This is only correct with regards to point 2. Point 1 and 3 stand irrespective.
On point 2, from what I have read I understand the concept of variable levels of response extends beyond EPO to many forms of doping. I am not a physiologist, but I find this plausible.
What is your view? Do you think that a 4:1 ratio is reasonable?

If testing T/E ratio just once were the only tool in the drug tester's box, you might be onto something, but longitudinal studies of T/E and selective testing (isotope ratio) for synthetic [epi]testosterone make manipulation of T/E detectable. Tests are available both for synthetic testosterone itself and synthetic epitestosterone used as a masking agent, i.e.taking epitestosterone to increase the E in the T/E test when T is elevated by either T doping or other androgen doping which causes elevated T, so that an elevated T/E doesn't provoke further analysis. Although elevated T/E is the usual trigger for isotope ratio testing, a doper manipulating T/E cannot be certain that is the only trigger.
