Yashica electro with a digital sensor would be my perfect camera. Either that or an Olympus XA with a digital sensor.

From the pussy who can't be arsed: if I can get the same image quality from a smaller camera for the same monies, why wouldn't I?
If you can get the same quality from a compact as your DSLR, your DSLR isn't very good.

I think we might have different views on this.
Deciding to carry my DSLR (5D mk1 btw) around more is one thing, doing it is another. I'm a lazy man, and I know myself good enough to realize that it's very likely I'd shoot more with a smaller, if technically inferior, camera, than my 5D. Shooting more also means shooting better, as I will learn and evolve my photography the more I shoot. Therefor, for me, a smaller but possibly lesser good camera, will be a better camera, since it'd get more use.
Makes sense?

Or simply because you can't take photo for shit.
Does it really matter? if you take a camera that allowed you to get the shot you wanted, then what's the problem?

Lenses and light are far more important than what body you have, whether it's a SLR or compact.

Backing you 2 up I remember reading about a photographer out in the Afghan war who was using 2 olympus P&S cameras, one in black and white and the other in colour, his pictures were awesome from what I remember.
High ISO on digital cameras is much better now for available light than film ever was so what more can people want unless they want to wank off pixel peeping all day?

Too right. Too many people end up worried about the right kit. It's all bollocks. Decent subject matter is more important that megapixels and sensor size.

Couldn't have said it better Ben.

no tilt and shifts, no fast af, no tethered shooting, no live view, no rental back-up and too expensive.

Yes but don't forget the looking down the nose at 'phauxtographers' and 'hipsters' with DSLRs.

Yes, but M-series cameras are small. Which is the point I was making: that there are small cameras that take DSLR-quality pictures.
What they cost and what features they don't have hardly seems relevant on a forum where people spend thousands of pounds on bikes with no gears and occasionally no brakes.

Compared to how quick fast digital technology is moving though I'd much rather have the bike thanks!

Loved the Leica, not the price.
Might as well get those four third/ASP-C compact instead.
even their ASP-C compact is ridiculously expensive (especially when compared to a Fuji X100);

Anyone know any decent clued up camera specialists for a little pickle I've got myself in....
Basically, I used up a memory card an didn't have any others to swap. I went in the camera menu to try and 're-size' the card to get more space for more pics. I went to 'format memory card' and clicked 'low level'....
Went back to main page and it said 'no images' but the card had all it's memory and space back.
Gutted as it's basically full of pics of my Mrs with our baby boy....
Is there anyway I can get the images back or does anyone know anywhere I can take it where they can try and recover them? It's just a cheapo Canon IXUS

You reformatted the card, wiping it clean, I'm afraid there's no way you can get it back G, there's little hope of getting it back.

Well that was a pretty fucking stupid thing to do wasn't it!
The data will still be on the card somewhere it just needs recovered. Have a search around for freebie ones on google. If no joy find a data recovery company and pay them. Should no the too much as it is only a couple of Gigs of data.
Then buy a spare SD card, they don't cost nothing these days.

8GB is like a fiver nowaday.
G, have you plugged it in and have a butcher in the card from the computer?

Give this one a try (first on i looked at so dunno) as they have a free version to try. There seems to be loads on the market for varying prices.
I have had some pretty miraculous successes recovering Red camera rushes even when the computer and the camera say that the drive is empty so keep on trying.
This is *exactly *why I was saying a digital sensor for old film cameras would be ace. Just imagine your olympus trip taking digital pics. Great lens, 35mm sensor, small. Perfect for traveling. Win.
For me though - rucksack with D700 and all the kit, or iphone4 camera. I'm looking forward to the day they bring out a smartphone that has the capabilities of, say one of the Canon IXUS cameras. That would be sweet.
