  • Definitely worth a try. Unfortunately "low level format" is usually more thorough than a "quick format".

I'm curious about the resize option in the camera - how does that work?

  • I just tested this - http://www.pcinspector.de/smartrecovery/info.htm?language=1

Formatted the memory card through the camera menu, it found the images pretty quickly.

    It's freeware too.

  • I'd just buy a few SD cards to be honest mate. 7dayshop do the ones with a lifetime guarantee 16GB for just over a 10er.

I've got one of the 16GB permately in my camera and when I go abroad next month I'll probably take a few other cards.

Still in 2 minds whether to take my 5D away with me, heading to Morocco and I don't really want to be flaunting around with an expensive looking camera, do you guys have any experience of this?

Also we are spending 2 days and nights out in the Sahara desert and I think I'll be taking film for that as neither of my digital cameras will hold up well to the sand blowing everywhere.

  • Anyone know any decent clued up camera specialists for a little pickle I've got myself in....

Basically, I used up a memory card an didn't have any others to swap. I went in the camera menu to try and 're-size' the card to get more space for more pics. I went to 'format memory card' and clicked 'low level'....
Went back to main page and it said 'no images' but the card had all it's memory and space back.
Gutted as it's basically full of pics of my Mrs with our baby boy....
Is there anyway I can get the images back or does anyone know anywhere I can take it where they can try and recover them?

It's just a cheapo Canon IXUS

MrSmyth recommended a recovery application a while ago, have a search for that

meanwhile, don't use the card in any way. And read up on what apps works best before you attempt any recovery so you don't make it worse

  • M9 really isn't a compact camera. Anyway, I'm just yankin' yer bandwagon-jumping, next-big-thing, I-will-definitely-go-out-and-shoot-more-once-I-buy-this chains.

Whatever get you the shot, maaaan.

Took DSLR to Marrakesh. No one gives a shit about your camera, they'll still want some money si vous plait.

  • Also worried about the sand/grit/ shit that gets in cameras.

  • Program I use is Photorescue. Works a treat everytime. Important thing is don't use the memory card again until you have recovered the files.

  • You reformatted the card, wiping it clean, I'm afraid there's no way you can get it back G, there's little hope of getting it back.

Ed are you having a giraffe?

  • I said little hope Ben, rather than it's being hopeless.

  • no tilt and shifts, no fast af, no tethered shooting, no live view, no rental back-up and too expensive.
a toy for retired lawyers and dentists

Leica Ms are for photographing life, not food.

  • like a disposable camera?

  • no, they can do food as well

  • Is there a better cycling camera than the Canon S95?

Edit: only 28mm wide.. is there a competitor with a 24mm?
Nikon P300, manual but no raw mode.

8GB is like a fiver nowaday.

G, have you plugged it in and have a butcher in the card from the computer?

    http://www.cardrecovery.com/download.asp

Give this one a try (first on i looked at so dunno) as they have a free version to try. There seems to be loads on the market for varying prices.
I have had some pretty miraculous successes recovering Red camera rushes even when the computer and the camera say that the drive is empty so keep on trying.

    Thanks, I'll crack on now....

  • Also worried about the sand/grit/ shit that gets in cameras.

I have dragged a D700 and a D300 around the Western US deserts, Egypt, Morocco etc etc. As long as you don't change lenses in a sandstorm you'll be fine.

    Lumix LX5?

  • Hah! Canon S100 announced yesterday. 24-120mm lens. Looks like a winner (but will be spendy for quite some time..)

Gosh, built in GPS with track logging. GPX export??

    ricoh grd3/4

apparently the same sensor as s95 but with a proper lens and better body

  • I'll concur, Ricoh is an excellent compact cycling camera.

  • I worry about sticking a digital compact in my jersey pocket - all that sweating, steamed up screen, moisture on the buttons. Anyone else have the same worries?

  • so. should i sell my 5DMk1 with 28mm f1.8 + 50mm f1.4 and get a GF1 with some m-mount lenses? (with the potential of a bessa further down the line)

I literally never bring my 5d out with me which is such a shame, i love it when I do but just never get round to it, it's just too bulky. Better to bring a lesser camera than no camera, right?

if you do decide to sell this I could be interested - any idea of a ballpark price for this kind of setup (body and lenses)

edit- fuck only knows what page I dredged this up from. apologies

When I had an IXUS I carried it in a jersey pocket and it was fine - no moisture problems. Though it was a bit busted so I didn't care so much if it did fail.
I now have a waterproof/bombproof/etc camera which takes shit pics.

Really tempted to go back to a less waterproof but much better camera. Probably just do the jersey thing again and hope for the best.

    5Dmk1 for sale

  • Eh.. bending one of the 50 tiny pins deep inside the slot might change your mind. Horses for courses though. If you shooting 30 mp raw files, performance becomes a bigger factor.

I did that to my 10D.

I FINALLY got around to sending it to them after photoben told me about Fixation about 2 years ago and after buying another 10D to replace it with and then a 60D to replace that with. Maybe I should've just got it fixed? ;)
