  • I'm looking at getting a tele zoom for motorsports (i go to a few btcc races) and possibly taking a few pics of my local football team (Billericay Town, come on you blues!)
Any suggestions for what to look at?
Going to be used on a Nikon D7000 (crop sensor, built in AF motor)
Not got a lot of cash so 2nd hand is likely.

  • I have the Nikon 55-200 which I use on my D7000. Not the fastest aperture but it is cheap - extremely cheap at the moment Nikon 55-200MM F/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX Black Lens: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo

    Ken Rockwell likes it http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/55-200mm-vr.htm

and I find it sharp enough. The AF is not as fast as on the pro lenses but I use it at bike polo with no problems

It's also very light and on the D7000 gives you a portable and very useful 300mm.

  • I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000HJPK2C Used it for football a few times and worked well. The image stabilisation helps a bit for tracking when it kicks in and autofocus is of a decent speed. Ken Rockwell seems to like this one too http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70-300-vr.htm

  • I had a tough time deciding between those two, plumped for the 200 as the whole reason I'd bought a smaller camera recently was for portability, it is lighter and smaller than the 300. with the crop factor it gives you 300mm effective anyway, and I guessed that to use the full zoom range of the 300 you'd have to carry a tripod around...

  • I'm going to get some postcards made. Been meaning to get some prints done for ages but theres something nice about a postcard's size and the fact they can just be plonked on the fridge etc.

Probably going to use moo as their quality seems good.

  • Checked moo the other day and was surprised about how much they charge.

  • Pricey but nicey.
Its that or get some C-types done at printspace...

  • Thanks for the tele advice.
Was looking at a Tamron 70-300, the non VR one, as it's cheap, but the Nikon 55-200vr for similar cash looks a good option.

  • You can hand-shoot fine at 300mm, particularly if you wait a touch to let the vibration reduction kick in. This was handheld at 300mm for instance https://secure.flickr.com/photos/mauwf/10261252836/in/photostream/ as was this https://secure.flickr.com/photos/mauwf/10261124265/in/photostream/

Agreed though that it does have a fair bit of size/weight to it compared to the 200 (I think it's about twice the weight).

  • i think the 55-200 will be fine.
Might look at a 150-500 in the (distant) future

I use www.printed.com for most my partners business printing needs (Business cards/ postcards and posters), much cheaper than Moo and the quality/service is very good.

  • Nice! I'll give them a try.

  • I use them

    http://www.solopress.com/

Not the cheapest, in fact, they are quite expensive, but the quailty is very very good and the turnaround is fast. Very good customer service too.

  • I must say I am impressed by looking at their plant list; 4x Heidelberg Speedmaster 74/5 Lithographic Printing Presses !!!

  • Although I sort of work for printed.com so fuck solo press; go with printed.com ;)

  • oddly great

  • Thought I'd check here before making a thread.

Is anyone interested in an EOS M with 18-55 lens and mini flash gun?

I bought it in the summer for £379 and haven't used it too much since as I mainly shoot film now.

  • Managed to find a Panasonic GF1 body for £75. Will have to start looking for a 20mm pancake lens soon...
