  • Only 300 squiddles Tim

  • Too much light spoils the night. Save your high beams for stints on the front, or iffy downhills.

    This ^
When I was in front of Sean... which admittedly wasn't often, my shadow cast from his light made it harder to navigate ;)
    Nice climbing btw Sean.
Don't think I saw you OOTS once.

  • Despite having one of the brighter lights of the ride, I do agree that they're not really suited to the TNRC. Twice when we set off after waiting at the top of the climbs I forgot to switch my light back on, and really it was much better that way when in the middle of the group.

I'll just have to remember to switch it back to low after being at the front on decents.

  • it was awesome having sean coming up from behind on dark hills, watching your shadow/silhouette growing in the tree tops, like a monster was stalking you up the hills

have been wandering round the office all day in a complete daze, with the content feeling of being tired through proper exertion - not the usual tiredeness from lack of sleep or indulgence the night before

  • Martin, what light were you using last night? It left me riding into my own shadow whenever you were riding behind me I think I might need to upgrade my own set up.

Good to meet you last night Tim. It was, as Shoots has so swiftly linked to, the exposure maXx-D, you can pick them up for 2 and a half. I only switched to main beam as BMMF points out whilst twiddling my thumbs on the descents, I mainly used low to mid beam as this gives me +10hrs with the rear dazzler plugged in. More than enough if you fancy riding out, doing the loop, then missing the train and having to ride back...

  • Just found out I'm going to be meeting Rory from Exposure next Thursday, happy days. I like the look of the helmet mounted joystick light as well.

Today is passing very slowly, I just want to get back out into the country on my bike.

Now I am Jealous, they are a good bunch of guys and gals it seems at Exposure, they lent out free of charge a 50 or so Joysticks to the riders on a Rapha night ride to Brighton a few years back.
Its what got me into Exposure in the first place, pass on my best wishes if you remember?

  • One of these is what occasionally got me home as a teenager. 3 miles of suburban sprawl, and 10 miles of unlit B-road. It's really all you need:

  • Sounds like this was one of those great TNRC nights. Gutted.

Mini-me is doing Ok now BTW. Didn't get much sleep last night tho :/

In other news, it was probably a good thing I didn't come along as this morning I decided to use the rally light set up to ride to work (I have to leave at 5am). 40 minutes later I'm at work and there isn't much of a glow left in the buggers. Think the battery has taken it's last breathe.

don't forget that you were probably on acid as well though at this stage of your life. ever ready + acid = brigt times we all know that equation

I don't know about BMMF on acid but I know/remember those batteries would leak acid after a few weeks in the shed...

  • Yeah, I leak acid after a few weeks in the shed too.

  • @Wools, i'm in for a Sunday morn jaunt. I desperately need to get some miles in after a distinct lack of cycle activity this winter.

  • Guys, when is the next one? Will you do the same route?
Are gears welcome? I'm really not a good climber without them :(

I predict that the next one will be on a tuesday night.

Only joking, its every two weeks so its the 30th of March I guess

  • Oh and most people were geared, I certainly was due to some pretty nasty hills

  • Next one: March 30th

    Same route: unlikely

    Gears: yes

    Dresscode: sports casual

  • How much elevation roughly? What average speed do you guys do?

Not sure if 30th is a bit overconfident, I am doing the Stevenage 115 on the weekend before ... But I will join at some point!

  • garmin record of the evening

Looks like a very hilly ride. Thank god i didn't attempt it! Roll on other rides.

  • Everyone that rolled fixed gets a Sean Kelly award from me.

It occurred to me while riding in today that there should be a SKHMA equivalent for inappropriate/massive gears.

I propose the GOBGA (Gaeme Obree Big Gear Award).

  • What a great night to kick-off 2010 season. Many thanks to TNRC headquarters and the recce team that made it happen. Tim, you acted the good shepherd perfectly, it got lonely at times on these descents with a 62'' gear and low risk taking threshold. Choice of gearing was a difficult one for the profile, but happy with the decision. Would be great to see more fixed rides but the tidy formation showed everyone made the right choice for the night.

  • Fantastic riding with you all the other night. A lovely warm southern welcome. The run home felt rocket powered by post ride happiness. Cheers to Purple for the lights, Furious for pointing me over the river and TNRC for organisation.

  • GOBGA would probably have to be 75+" without any walking for that route. TBH, I'm happy enough with my SKHA and my own battle against depression.

How about a TDSGA (Tony Doyle Small Gear Award) for anyone staying with the bunch in 50" or less?

  • Phone GPS track is a bit flaky compared to the Garmin and I shut it down at the pub so missed the sprint for the train which clearly would have dragged the av speed back up to the statutory 17.5mph.
