I think I'd be happier on 45x18, but I don't have a spare 18t, and the 17t makes for more 'interesting' situations.
Just done my Wednesday turbo session after less than 12hrs rest, and went better than the same session last Wednesday, so the TNRC is a great little warm-up ;D
Expecting to feel utterly fucked by lunchtime…

Everything seemed to fall into place for that one...fantastic evening's riding. As DJ said there's a kind of childlike pleasure in sneaking out for a ride on a Tuesday night when everyone else is doing regular stuff. Great to see so many out... roll on Tues week.

Who else was on fixed then?
I spotted me, claus, pajamas, and GinaG (but she's rubbish). What's that? About 20%? www.l20%fgss.com :/
BMMF - You've really thrown down the gauntlet there. I will be fixed in the future... unless it's really hilly or I just don't fancy it.

Thanks Tim*for telling me about that Condor/Halfords cycle to work deal. I've now got a new track bike in the pipeline... -

the highlight of the ride (apart from it all going so smoothly that we had time for a pint at the end) had to be when the second train guys caught up and we all said hi for a couple of minutes then took off into the night on a descent that seemed to last a couple of miles.. what a blast!
i had a useful chat about gearing with claus at the end.. i'm going to start my campaign to get up that 18% mother in a gear i can also spin nicely through the rest of the route. right now i can't imagine going anything like as fast on a lower gear but claus on 62" was often right alongside me on the downhills and of course way ahead on the climbs.. okay claus is a magnificent rider anyway but it would be good to crack it by the end of the tnrc season!
lovely bikes out last night btw and lovely to meet new people.. thanks again to the organising body, it was brilliant.

- 1 to all the above, it was just a great nights riding wasnt it?
I promise to re-angle the rear dazzler for the next one or copy sasmon/BMMF idea of covering it with something to diffuse it slightly when I start the ride.
Recover well and see you in 2.

Gutted I missed this. Glad to hear you all had fun though. Anyone fancy doing this route again on Sunday morning?
-
• #233
there was some stupidly fast spinning on those descents from youse guys on fixed...
Perfect weather, time for a pint on the way home, no p_nct_r_s, a tailwind all the way home from Waterloo too - absolutely spoilt...

@STE5 - I wouldn't want to deprive you of opportunities to practise high speed bike handling skills with a freewheel, now that you're racing. Fixed would be good if you're intending to do any TTs though - and you do road race like a tester (not a criticism, just an observation based on positioning and cadence).
@purple_mj/Sasmon - I thought I noticed some diffusion going on. I have vague memories of following a warm red glow up Leith Hill :)
@pajamas - what were you riding? 46x18? 46x19 would be absofuckinglovely for that route, at the typical TNRC pace; and I'd say that last night was ever so slightly faster than typical TNRC pace, but not enough to make 64" impractical. It sort of depends whether you think you've got more room for improvement in your lungs, or in your legs/(arms). You seemed to be going along fine though - bet you're glad you got cyber-bullied into it now :)

ah, it was cyber-bullying of the most gentlemanly sort.. absolutely chuffed i made it out last night and the encouragement meant it happened. yeah 46/18, which sounds similar to middleofnowhere too.. 46/19 is definitely next. when i've conquered it fixed it may be time to start thinking about a geared bike to go touring on.. but fixed is still doing it for me despite the obvious gear-friendly stretches last night. i loved spinning out down the hills... ;)

LOL DJ.
No jumping the queue. It is in the rules somewhere, along with not eating badger before the ride.
Searches thread for rules and regs...

The next one is 75 laps of Regents Park Inner Circle, averaging 25mph. As soon as you're dropped, you're out. And no lights, to keep it interesting.
-
• #240
What time are the trains from Waterloo?
-
• #241
laps of the park. in.
-
• #243
It's not *that *kind of ride club.
And for that reason I am out. -

For the FatCyclist 100 Miles of Nowhere last year I did 166 laps of the inner circle with a whisker shy of 20mph average (5 hours 3 minutes or something frustratingly close). It was very very very boring.
And for that reason, I'm in.
(Will actually be in for some TNRCing once work stops being so shitty)

I read that as outer circle and nearly had an infarct!
I love RP. Have to really, considering the time we've spent together over the last year.
BMMF - no aero bars.

... and you do road race like a testicle
Fixed.
More to do with lack of experience and thought than a particular style, I think. I will try some TT's, maybe in the latter part of the season. I'd also like to start some track stuff as well. So fixed stuff will feature in my training quite a bit.
Just remembered the fear in that girls eyes as she got on the train carriage on the way back to London and saw the lot of us strewn out in our cycling kit... classic.

• #247
fear ? i bet it was lust
you boys in your lycra and all -
• #248
No definitely fear, and a bit of panic.

• #249
Martin, what light were you using last night? It left me riding into my own shadow whenever you were riding behind me I think I might need to upgrade my own set up.
-
• #250
Too much light spoils the night. Save your high beams for stints on the front, or iffy downhills. That's how I feel about it. If the lumens get too much, I will seek darkness elsewhere :/
Beautiful beautiful ride. I have a big smile on my face just thinking about those manic decents towards the end, trying to keep up with those more manic than me...but with better lights.
Thanks to those that put it together, it was just about perfect.
