sam, purple, pistolero are you guys riding from town?
I aim to leave Liverpool street around 5ish, took me 2hrs 15 last time so should be in time to meet the first train after a catch of breath quick G etc.
Thanks for the advice all...
If anyone can lend me a front light for the evening I'd be chuffed, and would repay the favour in beer.Raskol, I can bring along a front light http://www.exposurelights.com/product/000020/joystick/ fully charged, will meet you at Effingham station with it. (do you have a rear light?)

purple. That would be fantastic, thank you. I do have a backlight, although again it is probably more suited to in-town riding.
-
• #104
They also help spot badgers emerging from the undergrowth (although you can hear them too).
Please don't treat this statement as fact; the word allegedly should have been used...
-
• #105
very tempted. that said, I am unbelievably shit at climbing, can't find my way out of a paper bag even when I've got directions, and possibly cannot afford decent lights by tuesday.
hmm.
and its capped as i've just seen.
anyone drops out, let me know...
-
• #106
sem, will be cool to see you out there. but by your own admission perhaps next tuesday is not the baptism you need. the TNRC season is a long one with plenty of opportunity to get involved. get involved you will

@ - fasteddy - capped for trains. more than welcome to join the ride at effingham. bring the polo bike again :)
Cheers clintsmoker, I could bring the polo gearing .......... but for entertainments sake i think I may select something a little more saucy!
On the lights debate my advice is get hold of the best you can. The roads are shot to pieces and hitting a big pot-hole on the grip and rip session back to the station will ruin more than your day.
See you fellas there!

Re lights.....actually I just looked at the route. Get a following car. Riding Tanhurst lane in the dark and fixed is just plain crazy. We will need much beer and several Mars bars before attempting such silliness!
-
• #109
@fasteddy - Tanhurst Lane was strewn with tree bits, but okay as we were riding at CTC pace (it's only March).
@Raskol - rear light's not so much of an issue. Personally, I think a powerful rear light is more useful in urban areas with loads of ambient lighting, as it cuts through. It can be detrimental to some extent in the darkness, as you'll soon discover if you ride behind purple_mj or andyp, as their bright rear lights are blinding, and totally fuck up your night vision.
-
• #110
You're lucky I don't use the Dinotte rear light that would really fuck you up.
-
• #111
^save that for in town.
It's all part of your method for making people present their wheels for sucking.

• #112
Gah, rumbled.

Oh - I was planning on setting my one to the fit inducing strobe mode - would that be bad form?
-
• #114
Definitely not a good idea to have a very powerful rear light on a night ride. As BMMF says, it's terrible for people following you (especially if you set it to flashing). Even a small light will be easily visible in the darkness, and especially a group all riding together.
-
• #115
It depends if you want to fuck BMMF up or not.

Oh, yes.
-
• #117
I'm fucked up enough already.
I don't mind flashing lights (up/down/blink, but not random disco shit), and I still think the flash differentiates you from other traffic. I flash, therefore I have no motor. And often a flash setting lessens the glare e.g. my Blackburn Mars 3 only has 1 LED on at any one time during the up/down flash mode.
If any rear light is overly bright, you have no option but to follow it like a fucking tractor beam - nothing else exists. Perfect for solo rides, or a backstop rider, who is literally the lanterne rouge.
(I wonder if it's worth people putting something diffuse over the more hardcore rear lights - tissue paper, vaseline, whatever.)

lighten up guys

I see it as incentive training for those that are behind me, to HTFU and get past...
