Ways not to lock your bike

  • Ha. Could be worse, I've had my bike double locked at stations before. Long walk home, that was...

  • Haha beat me to it^

  • Spotted in Soho this morning:

    Probably not there this afternoon.

Brand new! Quick releases on both wheels! Clipless pedals so not owned by a complete idiot. I looked around nearby buildings to see if I could isolate where the owner worked to warn them, but nothing obvious so continued on my way. Hope they don't have to learn the hard way.

would almost be compelled to take it and leave a note along the lines of "saved your bike you nompty, give me a ring to get it back".
    almost compelled

  • +1

Don't know if I'd have the guts to do it really, but it'd be a real shame to see it nicked.

  • nice.

    union street, apparently.

  • Thats awful^

Locking points need to be improved!

  • bloody hell...

  • Oh fark...

  • lamposts and signposts are strongest. then railings (steel ones not those stoopid alloy ones)

  • How thick would anyone like to guess that is? Scary. Shouldn't it be super hardened and stuff?

    nice.

    union street, apparently.

  • But not the older thinner railings, they can be broken with a good kick.

I'd prefer if they were solid, first off. Clearly those ones are hollow, and very thin at that.

  • bleh, shameful that bike shops sell and advertise 'locks' which are little more than plastic-coated steel wire without warning potential buyers of the risks. pathetic locks should be advertised as 'UNFIT FOR USE AS A BICYCLE LOCK' so the nompties do not buy them and think its fine to use them.

  • Hhahaahhahahah , thats jokes . with that giant chain aswell D'oh

Could one claim compensation from the council for something like that? They are advertising them as locking points, surely they must be responsible for ensuring that the locking points at least are safe from being cut through if they are going to do bugger all about reducing the amount of theft in the area...

Stainless Steel tube 48mm in diameter with a wall thickness of 3.2mm. Height (above ground) 750mm with 300mm below ground. x Overall length of 800mm.

3.2mm wall thickness on a stainless sheffield stand (the one with detail I could find in the Architects Specifier)

Supply cost of a sheffield stand is between 50 - 125 quid each (excluding installation, hold down bolts etc) - so in many cases the item you lock the bike to is worth less than the lock itself. Where I have had influence, I have always tried to specify heavy duty sheffield stands, but most street furniture manufacturers are more concerned with asthetics than damage resistance.

That was the one I could find off the net mind - the OD varies considerably, but I would bet the wall thickness for 316 grade stainless tubing doesnt...

  • Ray Smuckles - best user name ever.

  • Yes a massive lock just 'around' the seat... it's been there all day, fuck knows how

  • ^ the lamp post is too heavy duty to cut through, maybe?

  • ah, i spotted it. the head tube and stem are chained as well. that's why!

  • nice.

    union street, apparently.

snap i was going to post this pick saw it the other day.
It's an awful place to lock up any how as it's in an area not seen by many people.

^ Did you go back to see this again?
