Ways not to lock your bike

  • Could one claim compensation from the council for something like that? They are advertising them as locking points, surely they must be responsible for ensuring that the locking points at least are safe from being cut through if they are going to do bugger all about reducing the amount of theft in the area...

Apparently there are 'recommendations' on the materials to use for these but the councils don't have to adhere to them. It would be interesting to find out about this from a legal perspective.
It would also be interesting to find out which boroughs have the correct material and which don't!
    I new thread maybe?

  • ^ Did you go back to see this again?

From the spotted in Birmingham thread:

I wonder if that was the only lock he could get which colour matched his frame? Perhaps there's less crime in Birminghahaha what am I thinking.

I'm sure similar has been said before, but walking around Antwerp a while back was bizarre. Almost all the bikes, and there were loads, were locked up overnight with cable locks, often only to themselves. Not just old city bikes either, shiny new carbon fibre racers too.

  • I saw honestly the worst locked bike of my entire life last night in Manchester. Locked up outside a Sainsburys at about 9 last night was a really nice BMX, it looked well specialised but I have no idea to what purpose. It was gorgeous though, all chrome and anodized red with insane bars.

It was locked with one of those ridiculous combination locks, it must of had about a 5mm diameter. It was locked to a sheffield stand through two spoke of the rear wheel.

Considering how nice it was and how badly locked it was I was honestly tempted just to take it. I've never had a thought like that really, but I was just thinking I could probably just walk off with it.

Appalling. How badly locked does something have to be to INCITE me to theft?

  • Was on my way out of Tesco's the other day and saw a bloke with dusty lycra and top-range Sidis shopping, obviously after a long ride. Got outside and as expected his expensive Trek was leaning against the wall well away from the doors unlocked. Three lads walked by and one went to take it but the other two stopped him when they spotted me, I even hung around till he returned to his bike.

  • Theres a Bianchi Pista witha rear spok that i keep seeing outside CSM. Locked with just an ev mini, roudn the spok and 1 seat stay, to a single railing. Not exactly horrendous locking, but optimistic I'd say!

  • I always take my bike in with me when im lock-less, its no bigger than a shopping trolley or a pushchair. Get some funny looks but noone has complained so far...

+1 to this. Shop keepers, and hoteliers that don't let me take my bike in won't get my business again in a hurry.

In which vein, props to the barmaid in the Florence who let JayG, Clintsmoker and me bring our bikes in for a pint after TNRC this week. Even though there was a sign on the door clearly stating "no bikes". Win.

That's why one should only shop at Waitrose. Went there the other day, locked my bike and noticeed a Charge ... unlocked. I frowned for a bit, "shall I stay and look after the bike" and decide to go in and see if I can spot the owner. See a guy with a courier bag and ask"do you have a Charge bike?" "eerrr yes?!" "You haven't locked your bike". He ran outside, locked and came back with a big smile. I am pretty sure he could have left it there unlocked for a while without any problems.

  • Nice story.
What kind of social profiling did you use to distinguish the Charge owner from the rest of the Waitrose shoppers?

    .

  • my friend at school today locked his racer (which is worth about £800) to a railing through his front (quick release) wheel.. i wanted to cry.

  • ah, i spotted it. the head tube and stem are chained as well. that's why!

It's more of a bike bondage than actual locking.

  • ha, bike bondage. me liketh!

  • Massive Fail!

This woman failed to lock both the frame and wheels using her D-lock. I was amazed that somehow she had even missed the aerospoke! The spok was just secured with allen bolt skewer, so it would take no time to undo and put back together to cycle away on.

I waited for a bit to see if she would come back to advise her on locking, but she didn't return for a while I'm guessing.

    Also very slack chain.

Edit: This was just outside On Your Bike! at London Bridge, and parked in front of a sign advertising secure bike parking.

  • ^ that must win the thread.

  • Yes, this need an award for the best locking with an expensive lock without actually locking much.

  • anything! the lock is securing nothing.

  • That is a peach. Maybe it is a thief trap - the tubes must be packed with C4, the QR mech is the trigger.

  • who'd steal an arrospok anyhoo
there aren't too many blind, tasteless, bike thiefs around are there

Someone stole my bike, must be at least one.

  • That bike is fucking horrible any self respecting thief would just walk straight by.

I had locked up by Halfords on old Kent road whilst going to B&Q. When I was leaving a guy was walking out with a shiney new bike, helmet and a rubbish cable lock. He saw my Fagh and asked me about it, at the end of the conversation he went back inside got a refund and went home to order a decent lock hopefully saved one person from having their pride and joy nicked.

The lock is secure. They are quite pricey, those locks. But nice.

I used to get these feelings a lot. Once I just missed out on a excellent deal on a brand new specialized P1 jump bike on ebay. I was so pissed off because I was lusting after it and it was such a great deal.

Then I see locked up in my town centre, the same model of bike, locked with a poundland cable lock! I know from experience (used these locks for silly things) that they pull open if you pull really hard.

I was so close to taking it, seriously close.

  • It's worrying, isn't it?
