Thanks v much. I think I had a better position from early on, so I'm just glad I managed to keep the advantage

Not concentrating. forgot hadn’t moved my bishop between my two pawns 🤦♂️

I just had a total mare against sacredhart.
Clawed my way back into contention, after being behind.
Then threw it away with a silky mistake, allowing him to fork my king and queen.
Gah!
Well played. I enjoyed that game!

Good game @greeno, I thought I had the advantage early on but the errors kept sneaking in and you didn't seem to make any.
I probably should have resigned earlier but there was an outside chance of a mate, annoyingly, you didn't make the error it would have required and I didn't have the pieces left to force anything.

yeah well played mate. I messaged you on the game but not sure you saw it. You definitely had the advantage, i was lucky to squeeze out of that one and thought I was done, but when i did and traded queens you were obviously left open from your attacks.
in short i was lucky to get away with that. gg

Got an early check against but couldn't quite finish it. Was caught between chasing his king around and being able to step back gracefully without losing pieces in the process.
Was about to change tack but got lucky when either @AWu-Tang got bored of my not making progress, or he missed something and it led to mate.
Analysis of the game reckons I made a massive mistake (which I thought at the time was clever...) just before the end, but was lucky not to be punished for it.Enjoyed it though, gg

Not bored but in looking for a way to force an exchange which would have put me in a very strong position, completely missed your Bishop. Well played.

• #388
heehee - yeah. am on a long losing streak at the moment! cheers dude

i always enjoy the analysis, and im normallylooking out for the computer to tell me what a clever move i made only for the complete opposite to happen. The levels you need to think to be great at chess is so far beyond me

always up for pick-up games. and our games have been tight
-
• #392
too late now dude.
my losing streak (six games) finally just ended. with two draws against a player rated in the late 1600s. So they feel like wins

Nice!

Can someone remind me how to set it so games don't take you back to the homepage after making a move? I've just taught someone to play chess but can't master this.

I've less idle time to look at chessboard for a few days, with apologies to all my opponents for the slower play this'll result in.
Edit: moved over lunch, not likely to do much more for the day.

What's the best advice for someone who hasn't played in decades to get back into the game? Is it just starting to play again, or is there anything on strategy and tactics that would help? I have the suspicion that just trying pickup games may just result in getting beaten like a gong without enough useful feedback to improve...

Join the club and play some games!
The computer assisted games on chess.com are probably good I imagine for that, cos you can choose options for hints on and off and the computer adjusts to how you’re playing. So many good resources on there for beginners, opening principles etc -

@mashton I can only apologise - I feel that I dragged you down to my level of blundering around...
I find it impossible to play on a phone screen though, needs to be a laptop at least and better still a real board. I'm not sure whether its the size or more than Im so conditioned to flicking through stuff on the phone that I'm unable to concentrate!
And more apologies - didnt mean to reply to the post above
(Im going back to bed... and starting again tomorrow)
GG @jb000
I didn't make any big errors but you capitalised brilliantly on every small one. Nice work
