• Earnings however would typically be based on number of fares hence taxi drivers want to get where they're going as quickly as possible. Still no reason to be a cunt though.

  • I got a call from the company director today. He interviewed the driver, whose version of events was at odds with mine.
He then suggested the driver call me and we have a little chat, which I agreed to. The driver called me 20 minutes later, and we did have a chat.
He agreed he would never overtake other cars in that road, he agreed that he wouldn't like to see his 11 year old daughter alongside a 20 ton lorry, and she had done her bikeability 3 weeks ago.
He agreed that beginning his overtake without seeing the riders up ahead was extremely bad judgement
He also said he had no idea what the highway code said about overtaking cyclists. He didn't have a copy to go and read.
He and I ended our chat on good terms, as nothing actually came of the incident, and he has realised the implications of his driving. He was actually quite chastened.
He promised to share his experience with his fellow drivers.
The director then phoned me, and we discussed doing something to promote cycle awareness with his drivers, such as going and talking to them, getting it on their training syllabus and even me spending time in their cabs.
At the outset I am sending him a 3 point note about passing cyclists which he will attach to all his drivers wage slips this Friday.
He will ask two other tipper operators around here to do likewise
We will look at other ways later on as the opportunities arise.
All in all I think this is a bit of a win.

  • You could say that. Great outcome.

Everybody's OK and working together to make things better.

    Repped.

  • @Adroit.
Did you see the BBC CranePeople latest show?

The Hayes depot sent all their drivers on a cyclist awareness course
    that had them cycling around,
    and,
inevitably mouthing off about it not being their problem.

Bet you can find it on the iPlayer.
Might be a useful starting point for assessing the attitudes of the drivers.

  • Well that seems good.

  • All in all I think this is a bit of a win.

Damn right that's a win! Nice one.

    Repped.

    +1

Ace. So not only are you training up kids to enjoy the roads safely, but you're winning over some lorry drivers and educating them to give cyclists more space.

    That's a diplomatic victory.

  • That's a diplomatic victory.

For me to be described as diplomatic shows I really am getting old.
It wasn't so long ago that I would have dragged him out of his cab.

  • EDIT Just saw the outcome. WIN
I can't believe the driver has a child who'd recently done the same course! The person (coward) that complained is to be ignored. Unless you can get a face to face with her and point out her stupidity.

I did a HGV driver training a little while back and one of the best things to happen, was a driver that failed to take heed to warning about really taking the lane when passing through road narrowings and almost got taken out by HGV himself! He looked like Casper the ghost by the end. Not sure what health and safety would say but if you could get a truck from the depot to pass the drivers whilst out on bikes themselves would make a massive impact on their outlook when behind the wheel themselves.

I'd still carry a camera for future sessions for the back of the snake though. The best way to remove poor/selfish/dangerous drivers from the road.

  • Blue BMW 1 Series 116i - SA57 JHY.... what a cunt.

I was cycling around Vauxhall Bridge Roundabout this morning (around the back of the station, coming north from the A202) and in the far right lane. The car above undertook me, at speed, in the bus lane before cutting me up before the corner.

I caught the car up, about 20m later, under the rail bridge and knocked on the window, gave a quick (and probably quite camp) finger waggle and cycled off. The woman in the car just planted her fat fist on the horn and left it there for 20 seconds.

The next bit has me completely amazed. She caught up with me on Vauxhall Bridge, pulled over (again into the bus lane) with her window down, and proceeded to squirt an entire water bottle over me before driving off. She didn't get very far as the lights were red so I just stopped behind her and got a quick picture:

She sat there with her window still down, ranting for a good 45 seconds without taking a breath.

Not a single other person would speak to me from their car despite having seen it happen.

Interestingly, I googled the number plate and this is the first hit:

  • Obviously i'll be reporting it.

  • ^^^That driver...what a fuckwit. Point out what they've done wrong and they suddenly become indignant.

Riding home the other night, some 'tard opens his range rover door as wide as possible nearly clipping me. Thankfully, as always, I'd left plenty of room but it still caused me to swerve right - gave a bewildered "come on mate, look out!" and kept riding at which point he started screaming abuse at me. I stopped and asked what his problem was. He marched up to me complaining that he didn't see me! (one light on helmet and another on handlebars) "Did you fucking look before opening your door?" I asked...he says "no". Fucking moron...

  • You should ask him if he realised that it's an offence to open the door without looking.

  • You should ask him if he realised that it's an offence to open the door without looking.

    I didn't know that - cheers!

I've actually noticed the car parked in the same street a number of times since. Must live nearby. I might leave him a note...

  • A note made out of shit?

  • I'm not in favour of vandalising cars- it's a sign of weakness.

If you are going to do it- do it properly, tuck some firelighters under a wheel and torch the vehicle.

Very hard to knock a cyclist off if the vehicle in question has settled into the tarmac in a ball of fire.

  • Probably print out the highway code and stick it on his windscreen every day.

    And I mean every. day.

  • You should ask him if he realised that it's an offence to open the door without looking.

    Which offense is that, Ed?

Sadly I've taken to actually remembering the most common fallacies that drivers commit so I can quote the most relevant highway code number. Repeating it to their face gets the point across (sometimes).

i.e. 163 for the amount of space to pass a cyclist.

    Doing it wrong.
Light a short piece of an old inner tube, place it on top of the tyre. Then there is absolutely no evidence. A fire lighter underneath the tyre leaves sufficient evidence to prove arson.

  • Only need to do one tyre too. It takes care of the whole car.

  • Then shit on it.

  • There is still a bit of my melted mini on a curb in Theale.
