• Edit: I've roadsafed the bastard.

    Good man.

  • Exactly. I think any change in balance by removing a hand or giving the van a knock with enough energy for him to actually hear it would've sent me straight under him. Every action etc...

also it's all to easy to tense up in those situations and grip on for dear life and clench your teeth so it's not even immediately easy to shout.

Yeah, thinking back I think I'd just sort of stopped pedalling (roadie, innit), feet level to keep the left pedal from hitting the kerb, leant the bike left whilst keeping myself upright, to keep the bars away from the van and once I started getting splashed I think I might've unclipped my right foot (fuck knows what good I thought that would have done). Then it was just a case of trying not to stack it into him or the kerb.

Once he'd passed I shoulderchecked and the car behind him had slowed right down and given me a fair bit of room so I just tucked in behind the van and used the adrenaline to draft him the rest of the way over. I really don't know what I'd have done if he'd had to stop at the lights. I've never got violent with a driver before but fucking hell, that was a scary one.

  • I can picture it, and understand. That sort of thing can leave you pretty shaken. I am sure it gets worse outside zones 1 and 2, don't know why - maybe just because there are less cyclists around there in general.

Yeah, definitely less cyclists around NE London, I miss my old SW commute, loads of fast cyclists and loads of fun...

  • So this morning there is a Danjo's skip that has a heavy right foot, come past me pretty close (not dangerously, just uncomfortably close) and is driving a too fast for the time of day. I call up the office, not to make a complaint but to ask them to have a word and tell the dirve to ease up on the heavy right foot.

The response........"Are you a cyclist? You lot are always getting in the way but I'll have a word"

I was a bit lost at that point so just hung up. WTF!?

    Web address http://www.danjo-skips.co.uk/

  • is danjo short for danjorous ?

  • Luckily the skip wasn't unchained.

  • From the Danjo Skips website

    Ironic, huh?

  • Yep, surely it's safer to wear the helmet on their head. No?

  • Is that the crane that got hit by a helicopter last month in the background?

  • 5. Please tell us what you think or what problem has been caused?
At around 1445-1500 I was cycling sound along Levenshulme Road after just continuing around the right hand bend from Brookhurst Road. There were cars parked on either side on the road and in my (ex driving instructors) opinion it was not a safe place to overtake. Despite this a car overtook getting a bit too close to me, but the kind of close that you get used to as a cyclist. The driver of a council marked van then followed the car and overtook but much closer. This was close enough to shock me had I been alone on a nice day but I was riding with my daughter on the back of my bike in an obvious child seat and on a very windy day. Needless to say this was very intimidating and for a brief moment I feared for the safety of myself and my daughter. It was also an entirely pointless manoeuvre as the road opened up to a safe place to overtake around 20 feet ahead and the driver didn't get anywhere more quickly as I was still the road user behind them as we turned from Melland Road onto Mount Road and only lost sight of them once I turned onto Broom Lane and they continued onwards. Thankfully this gave me plenty of time to attempt to memorise the number plate, which was YT52 YNH, although could have possibly been 53 or YTH.

    6. If you're making a complaint, let us know how you think we can put things right?
Ideally the driver will be offered some kind of cycle training so they know what it feels like to share the road with few tonnes of van, and have them overtake inches away from them. I belive http://www.bikeright.co.uk/ offer this just round the corner from where this happened. If not then maybe a slap on the wrist will at least make them think twice about putting people at risk to not get anywhere more quickly.

Just left this on Manchester councils website, first time I've complained about something like this, although I would have complained about a taxi previously if I'd have got his plate.

  • i gather they're already making inquiries about that stretch of road.

  • Must be. Did I come across condescending enough? I was doubly annoyed as I had to write it twice after it timed out when I tried to send the first one. Do say I sound condescending.

How annoyed will you be when they respond and suggest you try cycle training?

"You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later. "

  • I also saw one of those M T Drains vans being driven in a very impatient fashion by someone on the phone. The plate was VII MTD. Gave him a wide berth.

  • I've done a roadsafe form, just to add to the evidence regarding this company.

  • Cripe, that driver gonna kill someone soon.

  • Followed a minicab last night through all the twists and turns of the back streets between Gt Portland St and Mornington Crescent. Not a single fuck was given when it came to using his indicators or cutting all the corners by driving on the pavement, despite it being pretty fucking obvious that there was other traffic sharing the road. Drove at me on the Kingston one way system today, yes, trying to push me off the road after an argument.
    Still fuming.

Really, report it. That is the same as, in fact it is, someone coming at you with a deadly weapon. One day he is going to hurt someone if he is not taken off the road or even taken off the street entirely.
