• Well done DJ!
I reported a taxi driver today, usually I wouldn't, but the other day someone cut me up and I chased him down to let him know what he did. His response was "You should buy some fucking breaks then!" Couldn't believe it! First I have a front brake and second the bastard targeted me cause I was riding a fixie!

Then today on Theobalds Rd a taxi hit my right foot as I was overtaking a stationary bus (at about 10mph), sending me into the bus! Luckily I didn't come off and chased him as he sped off, cutting up a brompton cyclist turning up Rosebery Ave...

When I caught him, he didn't even look at me, just sat there till the lights went on green and drove off. I followed him, took a picture of his Reg and said "You just don't give a fuck do you mate" to which he replied "Couldn't give a shit"!

Reported it... Hopefully something will come of it.
Does it sound like something to report to the police, or am I just in a really pissy mood? I just hate the idea that he's got away with it and is allowed to stay on the road.

    MONSTA

  • Colliding with you and driving off would be leaving the scene of an accident, no? Definitely something to report to the police IMO.

Well thats what I thought, but didn't know if I was over-reacting...
However I didn't know if clipping my foot counted as a collision :) I didn't come off and handled the situation. Obviously I think he should have stopped and said "Shit mate, are you ok" or something along those lines, but didn't know whether it was something to bother the police about.

if you have suffered injury - they are obliged to report it. Your foot will swell or bruise I would guess - thus this is a reportable accident... Report it to the Police before he does. seriously. do it now.

IANAL (I am not a lawyer).

  • It doesn't matter how hard they hit you, it's a collision and they left the scene without stopping. That's against the law. Doesn't matter if you're uninjured and the bike is ok, if they had bumped into a car and there was no damage then they would still get out and check the damage and (one would hope) apologise. The same should apply.

  • Indeed! It's my commute and never spotted him before. Well spotted.
    (pause at 1:45)

  • Just bought the ebay one, and am looking forward to the comedy potential also. This could bring a whole new 'spotted' thread!
Anyone got the card from ebay or any cheap recommendations?
Khornight2, I'm bring this shit to polo, be warned!

Getting mine on Friday... (payday) and was similarly thinking about recording polo (although obviously far from a first)

spotted thread where you are only allowed to link to YouTube videos!

Afl dude now does exactly the same commute as me (we work for the same company and live about a couple of miles appart in Surrey ) I still hardly ever bump into him!

By the way which video are you talking about, the link above just takes me to gaz545 page, not a particular video (using my mobile)... Oh and isn't gaz on here too? Here or the ctc forum...

  • the link should take to his page with a direct link to the video which is called "not your usual commuter".
I don't know if Gaz is on here. I am scared of watching his videos and seeing myself doing something silly.

  • When I saw 'why not to track stand in london' I did worry that it might have been any number of times I tried and failed to!

  • just reporting a royal mail driver on roadsafe

  • Just seen this thread.

I have to kind of read it cringing and looking between my fingers, but it makes me giggle.

It's like riding with DJ I sound like a drunk girlfriend, screaming,

"Leave it James! Stop it, stop it, it's not worth it! James, JAMES! No james, stop calling him a cunt!"

  • Interesting thing on road.cc about buses with external cameras, I wonder if you can demand to see footage if you have the reg etc?

It has taken a while but I'm pleased to report a small legal success for one cyclist (me).

Nearly two years ago while on a visit back to London I was cycling back from Clapham Junction when I was cut up by a bus. Classic thing - coming up to a bus stop and rather than wait behind for two seconds he comes around but doesn't get past, sandwiching me between bus and kerb. Thanks god there were no railings or I'd have been in real trouble. I can't do anything until he moves but I give chase and catch him at the next stop. At this point all I wanted was a sorry, but I get the thousand yard stare and he won't even acknowledge me. So I stand in front of him and refuse to move until he opens his window. He won't do it but he gets unhappy and starts to kangaroo hop the bus forward until eventually it hits me and the bike, pushing the bike over. At this point I realise he's gone beyond rational behaviour and try to drag the bike to the side, and as I do that he moves forward, running over my wheel.

Now I'm really annoyed, and amazingly the wheel still functions (it was a WTB SpeedDisc, in case you were wondering) so I catch him again. This time I stay at the side but I point to the wheel and get out my phone to say I'm calling the police as there has been a traffic accident. He still won't acknowledge me and drives off again, at which point I give up and write down his number.

I reported it to the police and the bus company. The company were excellent. They immediately reviewed the driver logs and the on-board CCTV which they said clearly showed the incident. He was disciplined - they told me he and the union rep denied everything until they saw the footage at which point he admitted it. The company paid for a new wheel of course. I thought the police couldn't be bothered, although I told them there was CCTV footage. But months later they wrote to say they had followed it up and would be proceeding against him. It took ages to appear in court, and had to be rescheduled once from last October to this week.

I had no idea buses had so many external cameras. According to the CPS there were 12 cameras around the bus and they clearly show all the incidents, and he had a copy of the evidence. I would have thought he'd just plead guilty but maybe he thought I wouldn't bother flying back from Abu Dhabi to give evidence - if so it was an epic fail. He didn't even show up in court - I assume he knew he would be done and had just tried to put it off as long as possible.

Bottom line... Proven on all three counts - failure to drive with due care and attention, failure to stop at an accident and failure to report an accident. He'll be summonsed for sentencing, which may be disqualification depending on previous driving record. The world would be a safer place if the only vehicle he's in is a bus, as a passenger. They'll let me know the outcome in a couple of weeks apparently.

  • awesome

fucking love reading that kind of outcome

the more we make motorists aware they cannot pull this shit on us the faster it will become a thing of the past

  • Good work!

  • Both cameras arrived today, took less than a week - just setting them up now, both tested and working, just sorting out the date thing, and will try a trial run home tonight.

  • Some months ago I was cycling home from the train station in Oxford. There is a queue of traffic leading up to a junction with lights. As I approach the rear of the queue I take a look over my shoulder to make sure the way is clear before pulling out to join the traffic flow, and then filter down the right hand side. The road becomes two lanes further up and I want to be in the right hand lane to make a right turn at the lights.
It's a single lane but there is nothing coming in the other direction so I took a wide berth past the waiting cars. I start to hear an engine revving behind me and decide to ignore it, there isn't space for them to pass safely and it's still a single lane (they are overtaking the queue) and there is traffic coming in the other direction.
There is a break in the traffic from ahead so this guy makes his move after revving behind me for about 10 seconds, blasts his horn at me and slams his foot on the accelerator. He sails past, I give him the finger. "Just another twat in a 4x4" I think, and assume that's it for today's quota of twats.
Not so! He has seen my friendly finger wave and is less than pleased. As he gets to the green light he slams on his brakes and jumps out of the car, then comes storming down the road towards me.
Knowing I was fully in the right I stopped to have a chat. In the middle of the road. Holding up all the traffic.
He seems to think I'm in the wrong because I was cycling in the middle of the road. We have a bit of a discussion, he has already lost his temper but I am aware that we are surrounded by people and he is causing a scene so remain calm and explain why I was in the road "BECAUSE I AM TURNING RIGHT HERE!" ok, so I didn't remain quite so calm at that point.
He hits me. I can barely believe it. I am raging inside but managed to keep a clear head. That's assault, I haven't done anything wrong. I'll accept an apology and for him to realise why I was in that position. He walks away.
How dare he? Driving like a complete cunt, hitting someone, and just walking away? In a moment of clarity I knew I needed his registration. Squinting at the back of his car (he had knocked my glasses off) I quickly put it in my phone, and double checked it with the driver of the car behind.
So I get the witness details, what's left of my glasses (they ended up under the wheels of a car), and start walking home, quite shaken up.
Called the police as soon as I got home and reported it, they sent someone out that evening... long story short (well shorter). He gets fined £100 for hitting me, plus the cost of the glasses, plus community service, plus a police record.

Not really worth it just to shave a few seconds off your journey home is it? But definately worth reporting these incidents, maybe he will think twice next time.

  • Interesting thing on road.cc about buses with external cameras, I wonder if you can demand to see footage if you have the reg etc?

A few months back I had an accident (massive face plant) in front of a bus (no fault of the bus at all I might add) and the bus driver and passengers helped me loads, calling ambulance and police for me, anyway I tried to get hold of the footage of me landing on my face, I thought it would be possible to get it through the data protection act but the bus company said that due to regulations surrounding cctv I couldn't get the footage, just telling me my front wheel fell off and I went over the handlebars landing squarely on my face. I did do a little research and there was some things about how some cctv isn't covered by the data protection act but never really followed it up. This doesn't really answer your question but is my experience of trying to get cctv footage.

Officers also have a pen-sized video camera that clips to their bike helmets: wired to a control on their vests, it runs on a continuous loop so that when they hit the record button, it captures everything, starting 20 seconds earlier — “ideal if you just see things kicking off outside a pub,

  • As a kind of related update to my question, I saw a ped get hit by a car on Saturday (or rather, a ped was stupidly running across the road and got clipped hard by a car he hadn't seen in the second lane (4 lanes!). I was about 40 feet away at the time, with a doubledecker bus in front of me and to the left. The police turned up, but didn't want statements from either the bus driver or me because they were sure that the cctv from the bus would have caught the accident, and would be sufficient for the report. Which I guess goes to prove that the field of vision for those external cameras must be quite good atleast, it's just that us plebs don't have a straightforward way of getting hold of it.

  • Ardicus well done for following that nutter up. The community service order is probably the best part...

A friend of mine requested CCTV footage form a bus company after crashing into a bus in his car. Paid his ten quid as required by the data protection regs, got a cd with the footage in some whacky format, and the program to play it. He proudly showed this to us expecting it to exonerate him from blame for the accident - it didn't at all much to everyone's entertainment.

  • Thanks clefty, was going to ask how long others have taken... It's only been 2 days! I want it now!

Anyway well done for remaining so calm ardicus and congrats for the outcome.

Anyone know how to get CCTV footage from sw trains?! Slight accident in a car park, camera pointing at the right point... Searching on the net finds that all sw trains cameras are controlled centrally, but can't find a way of contacting them to request images.

Somewhere earlier in the thread it says legally they have to have operator signs under the camera, but there are none?!
