  • I think so. They do the standard Essex run to the tea hut.

  • They're a really nice bunch, I joined them for a few cycles a couple of years back. There is also a quicker/smaller group from the club (used to be about 4-6 cyclists) that head out earlier and if I remember correctly they leave at about 8am; they cover a lot more distance and ride at a good pace.

  • So I have just done my first tri and thought it would be good to have somewhere specific to talk about them without jumping in and out of the tt, running and swimming threads.

Unfortunately these things are expensive to do so I'm aiming to do an olympic tri on 30th september and I'm aiming for sub 2hr15min from here!

  • don't you want to join the time trialling / TT thread ed ?

  • Still be an awesome time. Good luck you mad bastard.
One day I'll get round to a middle distance. One day soon.

On that note- this will be done in 2013: http://www.trihard.co.uk/Helvellyn/Helvellynhome.htm
I'd do it this year, but I'll have been back from 6 weeks placement in Kenya, with no bike or swimming training, so not sure its a good move.

  • Hmmm did search didn't find that in 2 pages of results!

    Doh!

  • what time?

  • How hard do people rate an olympic distance vs a half marathon?

Found it hard generating the pace neccesary for a sprint tri, was abou the fastest I could go throuout, but think I could maintain that for much further so am hopeing for some small speed improvements but to pretty much do the same speed just doubled for the olympic, is that realistic?

Will put my tri splits up later when I have them to hand.

Training focus is similar levels of obsession I showed for marathon training, even thinking about joining a club and training with other people....

  • LFTC is great, I'm not super active because some of the sessions are a bit expensive, but they're a friendly bunch and the coaches are very competent.

I'm going to Hillingdon in July, anyone else?

  • Seriously considering this:
    http://www.ironmanlanzarote.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=352&Itemid=338
As part of the 25 for 25
    (challenges in my 25th year).

  • My swimming's worse than my cycling.
I used to be a very strong swimmer, but lasted only 25 minutes in the swimming pool.
Thinking about it, it was a loooong break - ca. 14 years long.

  • Well done for that half ironman, at this distance it's not just 3 sports anymore, it's an endurance achievement. I could not even finish that!

  • Italy 70.3, Pescara.

    The numbers:
    Swim 43:27
    T1 4:45
    Bike 3:01:53
    T2 3:00
    Run 2:13:49

Great post. And congratulations that man.

I did the Blenheim Tri with a mate at the weekend (thanks again for the loan of the rack - it was invaluable and I owe you a pint or three) and despite it being a measly sprint your description of the run is eerily familiar. I blew up like the fat wheezy picked last for gym loser I am.

To be fair, the bloke I did Blenheim with had done a 70.3 three weeks ago in Austria and said he struggled on the run.

Thing is [excuses] the bike is quite hilly and being a sprint you tend to monster it. As I'd done bugger all road riding other than pottering round London's mainly flat London on the commuter for a year, I was feeling the burn quite badly before I'd even started the run.

The run too is hilly, weirdly longer than I'd trained for and it was a hot, humid, still day.[/excuses]

Total run fail. I seriously considred calling a day on my less than illustrious tri career afterwards but having slept on it have resolved not to let it beat me. Am on a mission to become a beautiful runner.

    Congrats again man. Sterling work.

  • Nice one Tis! Defo need to get your head up more often in the swims though.. unless you're training for an Ironman with the extra distance :)

How quick can you get your wetsuit off? Do you lube up? (hello nurse!)

What was the reason for the gut cramps? Unfamiliar fuel? Stress? Not enough liquid on the bike, too much during the run?

Did you do any brick sessions before the race using the same fueling you would in the race?

  • Sounds like a solid effort, congrats on going long on your 3rd ever tri as well!

Getting closer to becoming a proper sleeveless myself, even considering joing a tri club this week, have pulled the trigger on an olympic in september too so time to start adding lots of swim and some cycling training. Not sre just a 40 minute 10k is enough to get me where I want to be, but need to get back to 70kg before I even try specific training.

  • fwiw, I went from my first 5km run to my first IM in 6 months, mainly through not having a clue what I was doing and people telling me it was doable.

Spent most of the last 10 days marshalling at the Enduroman tri festival - performances from Deca right down to half IM were awesome, particularly the Decas - doing an IM every day, through all that weather even when there were trees and electricity cables being blown down, finishing at 4am and being back in the lake at 6 etcetc - great stuff.

  • check out the book going long by roch frey and joe friel
I have raced Ironman 15 times and i keep learning from that book right down to when to eat pre and during race. happy racing

  • Well done, Dan.

Much respect, even if you did some swimming and running.

I also did the blenheim. I hadnt trained for it very much as having done 2 olympics before I didnt give it much thought. WIndy and hillier than I was expecting.

What was your times? mine were:
    Total: 01:31:30
    Swim: 00:13:31
    T1: 00:05:07
    Bike: 00:40:32
    T2: 00:02:46
    Run: 00:29:36

  • Did you get lost in t1?!

    Good times otherwise!

  • haha. T1 includes a 400 meter run up a very steep hill

  • haha. T1 includes a 400 meter run up a very steep hill

    I can attest to this:

    My times were:

    swim: 11:27
    bike: 41:06
    run: 36:30

To be fair my half ironman buddy is usually a 20min 5k runner and did 29mins on this (5.7k) course... it's still woeful whichever way you cut though.

Bleh. Back in the pool tonight.

  • that makes me feel quite good about my 29 min time
