So- after a year of injury- this is a year of rebuilding.
Who's doing what in 2012?
Aims- a fast olympic, and maybe a middle, and maybe a sea-based.I've entered the Bala Middle distance, 10th June, hoping to crack 4h30...just missed it in 2010 after a chain problems on the bike leg. The run's first half is all uphill but then is downhill the whole way back, managed just over 84min for the run last time. The finish of the swim is a bit tricky, having to swim/crawl army style because of stones/rocks. But for 80/90 quid entry it sure is well worth it.
Want to do a full IM/long distance, but have decided to not do IM Zurich as initially planned as it costs way too much...so looking for 'long distance' unbranded replacement races instead.

maybe he saved his legs for the run....a couple of the others dropped off in the run.

I'm doing the Italy 70.3 in June.
Training has sort of started - I'm aiming for a 5:00 finish. (30 swim, 2:30 bike, 1:50 run)
Where do you do your fresh water swim training? I've always headed out on a Sat morning from april'ish to a ski circuit lake somewhere past staines.

This surprises me a little.

Me too especially when Lieto was supposed to have had the fastest bike, Lance 2nd and Galindez the 4th... must be a mistake in those numbers. I reckon Lance knew he had Lieto pegged on the run so just kept with him on the bike. Looks like a fairly solidly paced race to me.
Bala and IMCH both excellent races. I did both in 2010... At Bala I finished in 04:40.00 (00:30/02:31/01:34) and was pretty pleased for a 1st ever half.

That's a pretty amazing time for a first half! My first was the Alpe d'huez Triathlon, which is a bit more than a half, and the bike leg was tough, but found the run at altitude after ascending Huez the hardest part.

He's signed a promotion contract with the organisers that just happened to coincide with no-one on the podium being selected for automatic drug testing for the first Ironman ever.
Coincidence obvs.

Would love to do Huez... Other than being injured I'm all about the running at the moment but I can't wait to get back into Tri. My bike has dropped off a lot with the intensive running so my hope is to hold onto the improved run and get my bike back to where it was. The swim can look after itself.
I'm pretty torn between doing interesting races (norseman/helvelyn etc) or races with a big event feel on fast courses (Regensburg/Roth etc). Maybe I should look at Nice or Lanza as an option... I love the climbing :)

There's also the one in Dartford they use for the Bridge Tri, bit closer than Leybourne.
-
• #291
That looks a whole lot closer than the one past staines, I live in east london, so should be a lot easier to get to. I had quick look at their website (bridgetri) and see they have a midnight ironman distance race this year, bike is 18 laps of 10km each on a closed dual carriageway...not too sure I could cope with 18laps...but I guess if its dark it doesn't really matter.

You've got me searching races...ebay frenzy style. The helvelyn look interesting...I'm really considering. Also, the new forest races look good. I'm up for local this year...

I'm SE - I ride out to Leybourne, rather than try and make it through town.
Thanks. What time does the swim session open/close? Nice to get cycle and swim in...even with wet bag on back...

awesome stuff.
I'm away during triathlon season this year in Kenya. Will return in time to do the London standard.
And then a late season triathlon. And a Marathon.
It means I won't reach my goal this year, but a fitter better me should manage it soon.
I may try and find a middle I can do late season. -

Let me ear mark this thread.
My running is so much better than two months ago (which doesn't mean anything apart from the fact I can run 5km at 5:30 min/km instead of 6:40 mins/km) and now have to check my swimming.
I used to be a very strong swimmer, even had a life guard's papers, but it was 20 years ago. -
• #296
I'm doing the London Fields aquathlon 1st april, Windsor All Nations Sprint 21st Arpril, and the Virgin London Triathlon (sprint).
Might do more during the summer though. -

Question - As I haven't been swimming for a loooong time now, how much on average unfit person can swim?
Tempted to do half in Poland while on holidays. Is 5 months enough to train to regain fitness (I can only run 10 km right now)?

I think 5 months should be fine. If you've got a good technique, you've nailed the hardest part of swimming. Just depends how fast you want to do the 2.2km. 3/4 Swims a week with a mix of drills and stamina sessions should be more than enough across 5 months. I find an early morning swim after a run the night before priceless in stretching out certain muscles (I am the world's slackest stretcher).

To be honest I only do care about completing.
Thinking about it, I will do this the proper way and perhaps wait till next year (they only do half and full Iron Man) and in the meantime do some sprints. I've just joined the East London club and they have proper coached training.
I'm sure I was over ambitious and arrogant thinking that I can just walk in without any proper training :-) -

Well, I'm hoping to squash my training in this year. I spent 6 months last year on my back (1 month ICU, 2/3 months hospital...) with several lung drains. I really only started training properly in January, but am hoping to use a few early season marathons and middle distance tri's to boost my fitness for late summer and for longer distances next year.
