In reference to people not being able to make a fixed day for the qualifiers. I think this is kinda silly, The Euros will happen over 2 days, what if you can't get that weekend off?

not at all. if you work weekends/ shifts, you still have a set amount of holiday days.
lets try and accommodate everyone!

I have an idea.
All teams meet at downham in wrestling gear. Then have a "team royal rumble". No bikes, no mallets, just wrestling. Last 4 teams left go to the euro's.
I'll ref.
looks like the final is going to be between Apples and Sparkle then
Rik
vs Wayne

That list was announced as being for those who would be interested at this stage, so that GVA could get an idea of numbers and decide how many places we'd get. I agree with Ray, it's unlikely that anyone else will step forward, but it didn't say they couldn't.
We got through a lot of games down at Newington last time for the qualifiers. My suggestion would be a similar one-day round-robin qualifier on the date most people can make, but that we give the option to any team who can't make that date to play all other teams within a specified period around that date (2-3 weeks?). The league [st]will[/st] should be done by then, so it should be possible.
It means we get the joy of a big qualifying day and everyone gets to compete if their availability doesn't suit.

^ That's what I meant too, but Iain's explanation is much more comprehensive!

True. I also don't think anyone else would step forward, so thought it fine to go with what we have on the list. And I really think that as those teams were the number by which GVA decided, it's only fair to select from those teams. I still think those teams should be the ones that battle it out to qualify.
Admittedly though, the wording of the post didn't state it was a final list. sorry for lack of clarity there.

Yes, best idea yet.

This would be my suggestion too, only if those games could be played in 2-3 weeks.
It would mean the teams who cant make it have to set up c.12 individual games. What if there were some teams who played in the tournament couldn't make themselves available to play those teams? Could they use league results in exceptional circumstances?

No, it was voted for, before the league started, that it would have nothing to do with the Euros.
-
• #85
no, the league was voted by all of us to be completely unrelated to the Euros qualification.
If you can't play your games within 3 weeks, there's something wrong.
-
• #86
how can we accommodate this then?
-
• #87
come on, are you saying you can't get a sunday off in a month of sundays?
-
• #88
i might be in a wheel chair by then, can i still play?
- at least i'd never foot down.

not really. 10-12 games in three weeks is hard.
if we couldn't make the qualifying day, i would be happy to play all teams within the next 2 weeks, playing them back to back if necessary, but asking every other team to be available could be the problem!
i'm going to stop arguing this because I am going to be available, but please bear in mind there are some people who work weekends/shifts and we need to be considerate.

yeah, sure, hopefully everyone can be there on the day, if not, we'll have to work it out, let's cross that bridge when we come to it.

I can't do Sunday 25th April, got a date with Dave Yates. It's not unpossible that people will have stuff booked already as well as work. Obviously there's no realistic chance of qualifying but I would hate to miss an epic day of polo.
One day still gets my vote just because last year's was so good.

maybe we do two saturdays, and as many teams as possible come to both days, then any games left over will have to be played at alternative times?
-
• #93
That sounds best to me.
Or maybe one Saturday and one Sunday to help people which work one weekend day.
-
• #94
not really. 10-12 games in three weeks is hard.
Agreed, but we can't really do a lowest common denominator approach as for me personally (and I'm sure others too) it would be much, much easier to do 12 games in a day as opposed to 12 games over any longer length of time.
Just a thought against spreading things out I guess.
The 2-3 weeks to play all 12 teams would be pretty achievable if you think of it as playing 3/4 teams at each of your available days/nights rather than one at a time. It's no more polo than a league fixture and would mean you'd only have to arrange ~4 polo meets?

yep, ed, one saturday and one sunday is a good idea.

this whole mini league thing hmmm, if only we actually had a league that over the course of time determined how 3 people played together in a consistent manner...shame that we really should have thought of that.

^ The winter league wouldn't account for changing team line-ups and progression over time though? It's nice to be able to switch things up (power team solely for Euros qualification type thing if anyone felt inclined) and stuff...

+1
Its about who can perform in a tournament scenario not games that are all spread out over a number of weeks. If it were about the latter then we should have just taken the league results. -

No, it was voted for, before the league started, that it would have nothing to do with the Euros.

Yes Todd! Ooo the drama
