Scrapper, try to get yourself a gasket set for the carb, if kwacker do them, or sit with a parts man and get the o-rings for the jets, emulsion tube and mixture/idle screws, float bowl and carb top. It may be worth getting a new inlet rubber as well, as they can perish. It may not be the carb causing the problems, but it is a good place to start, and won't be wasted effort. Coil, HT lead, plug cap and plug could all give similar symptoms. Good luck with it, and use your best tools to avoid mullering anything.

are these all 2strokes?

yep, and they sounded amazing too.
Took a really skilful rider to get the most from them. I had couple, a Kawasaki h2 possibly the scariest bike I ever rode, it was one of my first big bikes, I was a novice and it was an evil thing. Learnt a lot in a very short time.
Scrapper, rebuilding the carb is like a rite of passage into motorbikes, and as it can be done in the kitchen it is quite a pleasant thing to do. 36 x 18 has some sound tips, and Blue Quinn's article explains it brilliantly. If only that sort of help was around when I struck out.
It seems like you have a few people here who can help make sure you get the job done properly -

Visiting site last monday, house at the bottom of a forest track, very muddy, failed to spot a more muddy spot, front wheel went and BANG I was on the floor. No damage, apart from a broken mirror, and paint scratch on the gearbox carter, nothing too bad... Annoying though...

Aye. There was a couple corners on my daily commute that I could do it on.
Current bike doesn't really encourage riding such as that anymore.

i think i'm going to retire the bike for winter now ( inkow it doesn't make me a real man) but it doesn't really like being left for a few weeks at a time. Probably stik the battery on charge and drain the tank. How do I get all the fuel out the cards? Just run it till it stops? or should I spray something in there.
Here's the last shot of the year - in case you see me and want to give me the old one finger salute. Excuse the fact my shit phone camera makes it look like it's taken in a sauna...

This just turned up in the mail.
Padding it with Gel pads from an old bike seat and D30 sheet I got dontated FirstGear Introduces d3o Armor for Motorcycle Jackets - Chrome World - YouTube
(what d30 is)
So should be really comfy and shock absorbing.
Carbs are a 3D jigsaw puzzle.
you can do it in your kitchen.
You need some compressed air in a can (buy this from Maplins) and some petrol or other cleaning agent.
then just strip down the carb, clean everything, blow the air through the jets and check the floats all work.
Here's a guide I prepared earlier. It's for a DellOrto SHBC 19/19 but most fixed-jet carbs are similar
