  • Cut race slicks on a motorbike on the road, u mad?
you will never ever get them up to temp.
    Not before you die trying.
Even sport tyres (I use Super corsas on my Buell) are a waste of time, and more importantly money. You want tyres that grip well when cold, in the real world!

  • Actually, is this your bike or does someone else own it, you just ride it when needed?

I'm quite interested in getting into escort riding etc but don't think my bike (Harley Sportster) is very suitable.

I ride it at weekends on Sportives, this was the Midland Monster. It isn't mine, I just get paid to follow riders and fix their bikes.

    Sounds good.
I'm gonna need to do some googling and get into this.

  • Spoke to a tyre people and the slicks and was told cut they would be fine, as getting heat in to the slick would be hard but with the cuts the tread will move alot more so will warm up enough for the road in this weather and the rain. But as mentioned they will be done in 1500 miles.

  • Facepalm!

This will be in the epic fail thread next!
On the side of the tyre it will say "Not For Road Use"
    Guess why?

    Cos they are slick.

    (Well were)

  • Need some advice for my dad's 60th birthday present. Want to get him something motorcycle related around £100. He owns a modern Bonneville and a S1 Li150.

Any suggestions appreciated, don't know much about the subject.

  • The answer to both the above posts is a track day.
Bombcup, your dad will love it.
Lynx you can try out the grip of cold slicks. If you must do it with cut slicks on the road (and of course your insurance would be invalid) you will need to know how a bike with little grip feels.

  • bombcup - What does your dad do on the bikes? Such as comute, have fun ride outs? Might give us a better idea of things.

adroit - Have had MZ with cheg seng tyres!!! If its that bad nothing lost hey. The tyre chap also mentioned stuff about heat cycles.

  • Rides 5 miles to work on the scooter in the summer, plus a few long distance group weekenders. The Bonnie gets used at weekends for ~100 mile morning rides.

Adroit, thanks for the suggestion, but trackdays are not his thing at all, he's a pootler.

  • If its that bad nothing lost hey.

    A life?

  • @bombcup. Does he do any maintenance of his bikes? Perhaps some tools or something. A man needs tools.

Nice idea, he's 60 so he's arrived at that beautiful lifetime's collection of tools (thinking Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino!) he doesn't have a motorcycle workstand / ramp, that could be an idea. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • If you are looking at ramps check out the sealey ramps as on offer they are good value for money.

  • A life?

The bike isn't an every day use bike. Its an experiment, and something I would like to know.

  • If you are looking at ramps check out the sealey ramps as on offer they are good value for money.

£429 RRP on those ramps. They look great though.

EDIT: Now I see there are other Sealey lifts that don't have ramps. They may be what you're talking about as they're closer to the £100-150 mark.

  • Wow they got expensive. Mine is a screw one not hydraulic and was about £140 but that was a couple of years ago when sealey first started to do bike lifts.

Biker jacket, motorcycle lift advice, do you have a secret life I don't know about Rusty?

  • My Dad's 1934 Matchless. The main reason I bought a bike and am trying to do my licence.

  • wot a beauty.

  • absolutely, what a terrific bike!

  • It looks even better in the flesh. I've only ever ridden it around in a small circle in 1st. Can't wait until I can try it out properly.

At some point I try and find the 'before' pics. But they're basically just a pile of rusty bits.

  • Did about 400 miles today, 90% motorways, and it rained the whole time. It was fucking horrible!

I hate motorways when they're dry, but when its all spray and puddles I hate them even more.

  • 400! ....... how many hours was that?
