  • You are a very wise man.

  • Sorry for being needy, but help is necessary. Turns out there are emergency talks taking place with Greece. This could work out more expensive potentially.

Okay, so tubeless will be about £180 before tyres (how much are tubeless tyres? What else would I need)? I could do MT35s with Continental X-King 29 x 2.2 for £130 (http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-29er-mtb-wheel-sale-tyres-tubes-76373.html). I think I'll just do that, unless anyone thinks that's dumb.

I may just do that plus a Deore groupset. But what do I do in terms of this Shadow+ stuff, and what discs do I need? This is all a new language to me.

    Deore options are: http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000%2C2%2C16;product=60024;mid=0;pgc=0;page=1;orderby=2;dbp=0

    And: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/gsd/road-track-bike/shimano-deore-610-615-groupset?part=GSMTBSHIMD610&sub=conf_GSAL&bike=1

Prices change a bit as you mess with Shadow+.

Is a triple fine with a Karate Monkey?

  • Monkeys work with many wacky drivetrain set ups, a triple is fine :)

  • Merlin wheels look good. Triple is fine ( as above ) with a KM. Go for the shadow plus, as the clutch mechanism is a welcome addition to any rear mech, but if budget doesn't allow, you won't die without it.. 180mm front disc and 160mm rear for the brakes.

  • Cheers! Do I need to take rotors in consideration with the wheels? The ribble groupset comes with six-bolt. The MT35s are splined (or whatever they're called - centre fit?), I think?

  • Also, could I get away with a GS or do I need an SGS with a triple (24/32/42) and 11-32 (or 11-34 is an option as well).

  • Centrelock.

You can get adaptors to fit 6-bolt rotors to CL hubs but it's generally not worth it.

  • Can only see the double group on Ribble. The Bike24 group will give you the triple chainrings and they also have the correct ( centerlock ) rotors for the Shimano wheels. I'd say the extra 10 euros is worth it for the shadow plus mech.

Be sure to get the IS2000 ( as well as centerlock ) brake mount option, so you get the correct calliper adaptors for your frame & fork.

  • There's a pull down for the triple. Bit rotors is an issue.

  • So there is. Looks like the Germans win this one.

  • Looking at the price of these groupsets is making me want to build a geared bike :-/

  • I'm 90% of the way through through putting gears on my Karate Monkey for a few "events". So far it's not as fun as it sounds... :(

  • looking to replace my on-one scandal as i want something slightly racier and with a seat tube that will take a dropper post. what should i be considering? quite liking the yeti arc but mega spenny..

  • On a side note Nirvana Cycles in Westcott now have Evil The Following 29ers in stock and available for test rides. Will be taking one out soon for sure.

  • Evil The Following 29ers

    So many parts!

    Does look rad though :-)

  • So many parts!

Yes, the intricate parts on many full susser's linkages can get mullered by British weather. I'm much happier with my hardtail during winter knowing that I have easier maintenance at the end...

    :-)

  • Scandal is already pretty racey no? What gen have you got?

  • Okay, so tubeless will be about £180 before tyres (how much are tubeless tyres? What else would I need)? I could do MT35s with Continental X-King 29 x 2.2 for £130 (merlincycles.com/shimano-29er-mtb-wheel-sale-tyres-tubes-76373.html). I think I'll just do that, unless anyone thinks that's dumb.

Continental X-Kings are great, but spend the money on the ProTection model, about £45 per tyre, but they'll last. I have a pair that have done over 4000 miles around the UK without a single puncture and still have plenty of tread on, and another pair that did Tour Divide that again had no punctures and have tread to spare. Superb tyres, fast rolling on road, grippy enough in mud.

  • Don't rule out the new 'puregrip ' version of the x-Kings either....they tubeless up easily and are grippy, but hardly wear at all.....and wiggle are doing them for £20 a pop right now.

  • I was going for the ones I linked because they were part of a package deal. Still haven't fucking ordered wheels or groupset though. Will do it next week after a bit of a cycling trip. Thanks for the tips, guys.

  • Those Evils had an evil rep when the first batch of the DH bikes arrived a few years ago:)

Sheared pivot bolts in the linkage at full chat mid race run made for exciting watching of the riders on the bikes. Small design error :)

  • 1st gen.. dunno if its racey if it can be specced with 130mm travel

  • Scandal was always their racey frame before they went carbon, and 130mm would ruin the geo IMO.

  • yeah i thik im after something more designed around a 100-80mm travel fork. I mainly need to change frame because I want a dropper post though

  • Thomson make a 27.2 dropper, £££ but probably less than a new bike.
