That is what I want for Christmas. It's a new cyclo-cross steel beauty, made by all-city.
Allow me to drool.
Nice. Love the deep section wheels.

Thought you'd be able to answer that one SF.
Love the deep section wheels.
They look like B43's. I've seen some tricksters using them but I would love to know how they'd handle the rougher stuff a cross bike would see.

Crosser's claim the deep section helps prevent heavy mud and shite building up around the ends of the spokes. It sounds like a clever idea to me. I cant imagine the stiffer ride being felt so much through the 35mm cross tyres either. I'd like some for my utility bike (based on cyclocross frame), so that I'm not carrying around a kilo of snow on each wheel during the winter*. Have'nt seen any wide enough that I'd be happy running a 42mm stuudded tyre at low PSI on though.
(*honest answer = they look cool)

Smallfurry, I can't believe you don't own a pugsley.

Tis a glaringly obvious mistake on my part.
I did look into it before putting the 29er together TBH. But those big hoops just seduced me. I'd also rather ride metal studded 29" tyres, than then uber fat studdless tyres in the winter, as there is usually a lot of ice around.
The obvious answer being that I need both :)

I LOVE the shop pugsley. I really wish we didn't have to sell it, it's so much fun for the 2 days we get snow.
-
• #308
If I lived where you lived, I'd buy a pugsley in 0.78 of a second.
I can't justify it for the UK, but I want one.On the 29er note-
I want to put a External BB and crankset on the GH2, anyone got any suggestions? -
• #309
Henry, you are welcome to come down and play with ours, at least till we sell it. It's great in the skate park.

oh you know i will..... I've heard its amazing.

I want to put a External BB and crankset on the GH2, anyone got any suggestions? The main ambition I have for the 29er is to ride the 'Birkenbeiner' singlespeed. Its route goes through the mountains with some big climbs, so I figured 29er over pugsley. I should of course have one in addition to the 29er, but I just dont have the time to do both justice.
As for crankset. I'd recommend getting a modded standard MTN crankset from Shawnee trail bikes. They look Fantastic. I have a well priced Aerozine crankset, ceramic coated white, and I'm very happy with it. If I was'nt locked into the gates belt system (specific BCD needs). I would have got a XTR. Hes a great guy to deal with too.

avid discs are the future (and the past) - i love those milled XTR cranks, i had some a few years back but they cracked in the end (not done by this same guy)

I have 175mm (very long for me), steel axled, aerozines, running on a ceramic Hope BB. You really feel the stiffness, forcing the bike up steep climbs. Probably the best value item on my bike*.
(* the cranks, not the BB. That was an expensive luxury.)

What gear ratios are people running for flat flowing single track? Just finishing my on one build!
-
• #316
I'm loving my 56 GI at the moment. Feels fast enough on the flat, and I can get up most climbs without losing traction.
Depends a bit on crank length to be honest. I'm 165mm crank user ideally (often use 170mm because of availiability). But went up too 175mm for the single speed for climbing leverage. This makes it tricky to spin though, so I reckon I've lost some top-end speed.

Yo,
Just got my Surly Karate Monkey-frame today :) Looks nice.
I'm hoping to build it up this weekend.
But, would it be required to get the BB-shell faced? I'm going to move a set of LX-cranks with external bearings from my old bike..
I'm kind of thinking that the bearings are not that expensive, so I might as well try and see if it works without facing, and then get it faced if the bearings get fucked.. But if it's for sure required then it would be stupid not to get it faced..
How about riding carbon seatposts? I have an FSA-one that is rated for MTB-use, but I do weigh in at 220lbs so I don't really know.. :)

i run 170mm for the fixed 29er and 180mm for the ss 69er, 180's are amazing (shimano hollowtech and raceface deus - both very very stiff)

i've not had a carbon post snap on me since the early 90's think the vast majority are find for most types of mtb, wouldn't recommend it for downhill!
as far as the facing goes it's all about the tolerences of external bbs, you don't HAVE to face them but they wont line up perfectly which will cause your bearings to wear quicker, and it can be a lot quicker depending on how wonky your alignment is

I'd just get the BB faced. Given enough time and premature bearing replacements. You will have earnt the cost back in.
-
• #321
180's are amazing
Not sure my 30" legs could turn a 180mm crank ;)

I run 62GI but I ride fixed (not exactly a 29er but offroad!) Any lower and it would be almost unusable/spinning out city
Where I live it is all flat flowing single track/fast fireroads and 'normal' SS gearing (low 50s) was a chore when i use to ride SS as just spent half the time coasting (not by choice) -
• #323
OK, thanks guys I think I'll settle for 36-17 with 170 cranks which according to sheldon will give me 54.5 on 26' wheels
-
• #324
haj get your b.b faced if you're going with external b.b if you take the frame to a shop ready stripped they will prob only charge you £15.
-
• #325
Okay, actually I'm going to try without facing..
The cranks, and the bearings have been used on the old frame by me for a year, I tried pushing them by hand and let them spin without the chain on, they went about 1½ rotation before stopping.. on the Monkey they go 2½ rotations.. So I guess the bearings can't be that much out of alignment.
If they wear out within 6 months I'll get it faced before getting new bearings..
On the street the Karate Monkey already feels much better than my aluminum Focus with shitty Suntour forks.. and it's lighter as well.
Yep. stiffens up the disc brake connection area.
