For one thing, we don't yet have vegan supermarkets in London, and there are quite a few in Germany.
Really? You have none in all of London? Why doesn't somebody make one?
In Berlin there's a lot of organic stores that sell some of the special stuff vegans are after, like nutritional yeast, vital wheat gluten etc.
but I know of only two dedicated vegan ones in the city, the big "Veganz", and a small, new one -http://veganladen-kollektiv.net/veganladen/

Right then, forum minibreak in Berlin?
Tina can be our guide, and maybe Laner if he's still pond-hopping?

No, there aren't any. There are plenty of health food shops, but they tend to be vegetarian (some are omnivorous).
Why doesn't somebody make one?
Your guess is as good as mine.

^ I saw biltong for sale in a 'health food shop' here once. Bizarre.
Things are changing though. Where once you had to apologetically ask a chef to invent something suitable for a vegan, or worse, ask them to take the meat/dairy out of a dish (whereupon you'd be presented with a boring salad or plate of veg and bread) you're far more likely to find at least one vegan option on a menu now, depending on the restaurant/café.
It's also becoming increasingly de rigueur for cafés/coffee shops to offer vegan cakes.

Soo, gf is visiting from Finland these days and she's never been to Oxford so might visit one of the two tomorrow. Any nice vegan place/cafe/restaurant we can go for lunch?
I will google for something but any suggestion is much appreciated.

The classic is the Magic Café. I've had two nice meals there on very rare visits to Oxford. Charmingly, they don't appear to have a web-site of their own.

Simple food and no great culinary adventure, but fine.
Also found this while searching, but I haven't been there:

Alpha Bar Salad bar in the covered market, but the market is probably closed on the bank holiday.
There's a pub- gardeners arms which is veggie, and OK.
And there's a little cafe down a side street next to the Odeon Cinema on Magdalen St,
Apparently called the Organic Deli cafe.
The last one is quite good. -

I have neglected this thread for too long!
I definitely want to do a proper vegan ride soon, my current thought is that if we ride far enough then it will counterbalance all the junk and prolong the onset of sugar comas just long enough to make it home in one piece!
Now all I need to do is come up with a route that takes in miss cupcake and cookies and scream and includes pizza and pancakes/waffles at some point along the way. -

Thanks Oliver and eyebrows
Plans changed and no Oxford but I will definitely remember the places for next time I'll be there. -

Neewbie but definitely interested in this.
I don't know any other vegans much less those who cycle.
My money would be on Berlin now, too--it may have overtaken London (which is, obviously, pretty good). I'm always hearing that veganism is growing hugely in Germany. For one thing, we don't yet have vegan supermarkets in London, and there are quite a few in Germany.
Whenever I've been to Germany recently to see my family, I've noticed new attention to veganism (newspaper articles, a well-regarded omnivorous restaurant in Mainz now has a vegan menu (I've been meaning to go, but they were closed both times we tried), etc.). There was also an optimistic article in The Vegan about Germany a while back.
