  • ...hey let's not forget about that one
    ;-)

    sorry for the delay!

so this was the original one, in milk bar in soho before it changed hands and went to shit:

and this was my version (same recipe kindly donated by ex-barista)

  • I haven't used a forum, but you could try this?

    http://www.vegansociety.com/veganpledge/

I did this last year, worked for me - the events were really worthwhile.

Anyone here run? This bunch have set up the first vegan ultra races in the UK - I'm in for the 90km race - it's 28 June, right in midsummer, so there's a chance pf getting round in daylight...

  • ^^ Lucy, nice picture but no recipe.

  • I'm in for the 90km race
A 90k fell race? When I saw the distance, I was going to ask whether you were at least doing it on roller skates, but ... :)

haha that's because i'm at work! sorry i should have been more explicit - i'll put the recipe up when i get home as i don't have it on me now. i wasn't expecting you to ad lib your own based on a photo

  • Yes, please post the recipe!

That photo looks mouth-watering, very very nice..

  • After laughing at my vegan friends my whole life I was sent a video called farm to fridge... I might never eat meat again

Sorry to hear you had to sit through that. Look for the hugely positive motivations in turning vegetarian/vegan, too, not just the scary, disgusting shit involved in making animal products. I've read a good deal about the latter but I've never watched the gross videos or spent a lot of time looking at pictures of animal abuse (and I have no desire to).

  • Nor do I ^

I would however, love for the people who look at me suspiciously and insist veganism is an eating disorder, to watch these vids though as words don't seem to make the points clearly enough :(

Sure, I'm not currently the best advert for it, but that is a separate issue.

  • Veggies are good yum.

  • People who think vegans just eat vegetables >>>>>

  • My favourite is "..but you do eat fish, right"?

  • Someone actually asked me the other day why I don't eat human food.

  • has anyone seen "earthlings" narrated by joaquin phoenix? even as a vegan i can't watch it all the way through, i did it once but couldn't ever do it again. and as strongly as i feel about veganism i can't bring myself to make my non-vegan friends or family watch it, it's horrendous (and obviously all true)

    french toast recipe
    1 block firm silken tofu
    1 banana
    2-3 tblsp maple syrup
    cinnamon to taste
    blend together until liquid
melt lots of butter in a pan
spread mix onto each side of bread and fry until crispy
garnish w/ whatever (i went for fruit, caremlised banana, dusting of icing sugar)
also warning, it makes an absolute buttload of french toast

  • melt lots of butter in a pan

    erm...

  • My favourite is "..but you do eat fish, right"?

Not vegan, but whilst traveling in Vietnam it was easier to explain myself as a buddhist to get what food I wanted.
A number of times the people I was with would explain it to a waiter/ress with the caviat 'but he does eat eggs', to be met with guffaws or general derision.

  • ^^Even though its not real butter I still refer to soya spread as butter.

  • with the caviat 'but he does eat eggs'
    You must mean 'caviar'. ;P

yeah i'm taking it as a given that anyone bothering to read this thread knows i mean non-animal-fat spread when i say "butter"

    also oliver "lol"

I tried this trick in SE Asia, China and Japan but still ended up with fish sauce in lots of dishes. Maybe the fish used are so small they don't count as animal? A bit like the way meat stock, anchovies or bacon doesn't seem to count in various European countries.

It didn't help that I was travelling with an unsympathetic meat-eater who rolled his eyes or had a pop at me every time it happened.

    euph?!

I plan to visit Japan sometime soon and this is a concern of mine.

  • french toast recipe
    1 block firm silken tofu

    Thanks!

How much (in gram) is "1 block tofu" where you are?

  • I plan to visit Japan sometime soon and this is a concern of mine.

Japan is tough, I spent three weeks there and had to live on oreos and rice balls a lot of the time. There are however lots of amazing vegan restaurants in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Id also highly recommend getting yourself a "vegan passport" its a great way to explain what you do and dont eat in situations where the language barrier is an issue.

LFGSS vegan trip to Japan anyone?

  • My feeling isn't so much the translation of being vegi/vegan, more the cultural norms that just don't get it.
I.e. they will hear you say 'I don't eat fish' and still add fish stock, because thats what they do. (not to spite, just lack of understanding)
