you need the apple fanboy thread. this is the IT geek thread where they talk about things called 'desire' 'streak' 'flash' 'robot' or 'lightning' running things like 'cake' 'yo-yo' or 'rich tea'. when really they are just phones.

hada dell streak before swapping it out for a galaxy s... excellent handset unbeliveable if u use phone for internet browsing, was fast and responsive... only swapped it because it was locked to o2 and i wanted it on orange which still hasn't been sorted yet..
galaxy s has a early non working port of 2.3 so cant be long until it gets a fully working... part of me thinks that the galaxy s is actually better than the nexus s... what on earth is the non exandable memory about!!

So my Desire got an upgrade to 2.29.405.2 last night, but I had to remove quite a few apps to make space for the upgrade. What doesn't really make sense is once it was installed I can install all those apps and more again, so presumably it needs temporary space?
Is there any way round this? And are there any other files I should be trying to keep down/delete like temporary files?
I wish more apps supported move to SD.

Just as the Snapdragon was the performance chip of its time, it seems that the Tegra 2 may possibly be the future.
At least if one is considering fullest compatibility and performance. -

Actually they're mobile OS version code names. Guess what? Your buddies at Apple do the same thing - Snow Leopard, Sex Panther, etc..

You should've tried a reboot before removing stuff. It clears cache data and frees up space.

thinking of getting a budget upgrade, would anyone recommend the htc wildfire?
-
• #3886
Wildfire is good, but I'd compare it against the LG Optimus One P500. As a budget phone its pretty well specced, and comes with Froyo 2.2 (and upgradeable to 2.3). The Wildfire is upgradeable to 2.2 (now actually). The trade off between the Wildfire and the One P500, is that the Wildfire has twice the memory for apps, but a lower resolution screen.
Don't confuse the LG Optimus One P500 with the older LG Optimus GT540 though, as that spec is quite a bit lower.
Wildfire still edges it, unless the updates in 2.3 are important, like NFC.

Depends how cheap you can get it, but the Orange San Fran seems better and is £99.
For me the slower processor and smaller screen irked quite quickly, so I sold it and got a Desire.

Good call, but only available on Orange?
-
• #3889
Rich said replacing the OS with Froyo was pretty easy, I assumed this would unlock it too. No?
-
• #3890
I would recommend the San Fran wholeheartedly. There are (much) better Andoid devices out there, but they cost 3 or 4 times as much if you want to avoid contracts. I like to treat phones as disposable items, so dropping a hundred pounds on something that I fully expect to be broken or obsolete within the year is a no-brainer. If I change my mind earlier, I'll push it on the bay for a few quid and get something else. I hate contracts, so for me the decision was easy. YMMV.
Unlocking it is separate from rooting it which in turn is separate from flashing the new ROM. however the unlock codes are freely available online (free like beer). The code is the same as the one for the ZTE bluebelt.

I'm on T-Mobile also, and only recommended those that could be upgraded at Carphonewarehouse. Their phones are all unlocked to any network, so basically you just choose the model that is within your upgrade allowance, and Robert is your mother's brother.
If you wait a few weeks, the value of the Desire will come down quite alot, as they (Carphone and all other mobile retailers) will want to move onto selling the latest and greatest, leaving the Desire as a end-of-line bargain. Thats the other option.

this is true, i have had at look at cpw and the offers are better there as well, as little as £20 pm for unlimited internet access, so i might just wait till the new year for the desire. -

Samurai II: Vengeance is being ported to Android in the early new year. Things are looking up from a gaming perspective.
The iPhone had a big lead, but my patience is beginning to be rewarded. I always wanted action games on my Android phone,
so I can definitely say that this is very cheerful news. -

The LG Star has been officially named as the LG Optimus 2X. It's now on pre-order at a Swedish website for approximately £550.oo. http://cdon.se/hemelektronik/lg_optimus_2x_p990_dark_brown-13444763
Though I'd wait till Expansys have it, or at least one of. the major UK retailers.

Anyone fancy swapping their Desire Z for a normal Desire. I like the idea of a proper keyboard.
