What's wrong with Gmail? I only use the gmail app. I had work emails on the phone once with the HTC email client but couldn't be arsed living and breathing work 24hrs. Killed it off. Gmail does what I want but I'm using gmail on PCs most of the day anyway so I don't use it 'that' much.
I was using the HTC client to read my googlemail account. I like the way you can set it to sync at different times on peak and off peak etc. can't see any of the sync setting for the gmail app, unless I'm just being dumb. how often does it sync?

This doesn't really help though, it brings up lots of news stories about how just about everyone with a Wildfire is getting Froyo in August. Yeah right!
I just tried to get that gmail update and it's Froyo only =(

When that happened did the screen underneath look normal? Or were there lines all over it? The top of the screen is fine, it isn't cracked at all, it's underneath.
I think the screen on mine look pretty much ok but you couldn't use all of it so I couldn't put my SIM PIN in to use the phone.

MrG, as said above, either take it into a shop, or if in London, see if you can meet up with one of us that has a T-Mobile Desire. Hopefully it may just be an issue of forcing through the update. Even though I gave the news early, I didn't update for 24hrs, and then forced it. I was busy when the notification came through so cancelled it. Its all working now, and possibly shouldn't much different to get yours up to date.

I've just borked mine. I'm trying to install it manually using the adb shell at the moment.
The r9 ROM I'm using won't auto update gmail. I'll have a look when (if) I finish.I manually sync mine, for the record.

Fox, it think some screens are made up of layers, and not just one piece of curved glass.
That said, it could be the matrix imbedded in or just below the screen thats shattered.
Either way, since they come as one unit, it would be a screen replacement job.http://www.bizzntech.com/2009/01/23/different-types-of-touch-screens-in-mobile-phones

The r9 ROM I'm using won't auto update gmail. I'll have a look when (if) I finish.Installed gmail 2.3, first time I'd done so by scanning a barcode from my pc, very clever that. Have deleted my account settings from the HTC client so i'll see how it goes. Don't need emails instantly but some need a response within the hour say, so on the HTC one I had it set to check for emails every 10 min between 08:00 and 20:00 and every hour outside those times.

"The Gmail application is push. The server lets your phone know so the refresh is when ever you recieve an e-mail (granted there is a small delay the odd time)"
Gmail sync frequency on Desire - boards.ie
Which makes sense because some times my phone goes off before I get the email in my PCs gmail window and sometimes the other way around. Duh. I'm thick.

Any word on the official o2 froyo update after the recent false dawn?
-
• #2813
For what? Desire?
Oh they pulled it. Sorry I forgetz. -

Fox I don't think you'll be waiting long for the Froyo update. Its supposed to soon follow the Desire's Froyo update, so should be within a matter of weeks.
I've found this on the HTC site, and can't tell if its a major update, or actually the Froyo update.

*Update – HTC Wildfire Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update
You can now download the latest software update for new features and improved performance. It won’t delete any of your content and we’d recommend using a Wi-Fi connection as this is a large update. If not, standard data connection charges may apply. Any questions? Contact us via *www.htc.com*. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Software number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software Information> Software number). The new Software number will be 1.25.405.1
Update Information: 1. Enhances support for Facebook status display when dialing; 2. Increases support for Google Services like Google Talk, Android Market and others; 3. Improves combining contacts from Outlook and other source
Note: We still recommend you back up your all personal data first. *Techie-bods may help out with this. (MrW)hippy?

When I baked my last ROM I included the 3D image gallery. I don't get it. It kind of moves when you tilt the phone = what's the point?
Modaco r9 now includes Gmail 2.3 btw

Right I don't want to sound like a plonker but on my phone (desire) I've got google mail and then I've just downloaded gmail. Now I know that these are exactly the same thing so why could I download both of them?
-
• #2823
You just downloaded the update.
Open your gmail app, press the Menu button, press More, press About. It should say Version 2.3
-
• #2824
Ah yes!
So how come the update was labeled gmail but the app is googlemail?
-
• #2825
It used to be that Gmail was part of Android, with this version they've separated the Gmail app so it's now Market available. That's why it looked like a new app and only showed 'Install' rather than 'Update'.
When that happened did the screen underneath look normal? Or were there lines all over it?
The top of the screen is fine, it isn't cracked at all, it's underneath.
