don't stop posting GA2G, I for one like the potted Android news in this thread.
SO my Wildfire has arrived and it is feckin awesome
however, can anyone tell me how to make it go to sleep and wake up automatically because the alarm doesn't go off if the phone is off (what's with that?!)
also is it better to use the gmail app for gmail or use the imap setup with the built in email client?
now I want to know when 'factory unlocked' Wildfires get Froyo =)

@ParryMan get the desire, I don't think the absence of a physical keyboard will bother you

• #2532
I really like the dell streak but refuse to go onto o2 because they pay Sean Bean.

• #2533
Am I being stupid - there isn't anything needing to be done to kickstart an OTA update is there?! I'm waiting for Froyo, and damned if I ain't got it yet! Is there a check for updates option somewhere?!
-
• #2534
yes, in the settings somewhere. It's a force check option, but it should be auto checking as well.
-
• #2535
Yass!!! It's there!! Thanks thanks

Not sure, what i/my Mrs found out is that the alarm won't go off if you kill the clock app with advanced task killer, even though it still shows the alarm symbol on the top bar of the home page. Best just just let the clock run in the background and untick it in ATK if you rely on the phone as an alarm.

Settings .. About Phone .. Check for System Updates.
But, in my experience, don't worry about it. It'll happen one day, you can't speed it up. It's only a mobile phone operating system minor version number upgrade. You're better off, by far, getting excited about what you might make for dinner.

GA2G you're takin' this too personally. banned I like this thread.
Here's Paul's radio app of the day to change the subject.

No-one wants local radio. Ever. Not commercial local radio in any case

*I haven't listened to a radio for 10 years.

Hola
Just picked up a Desire on O2 today and it's fucking sweet. Annoyingly though, it's still running 2.1. Did a bit of looking round and it could be as long as a month for the update to go live for O2 users. Even more worrying Android forumengers (Androidgers?) are saying this is because O2 are stripping out functionality like WiFi hotspot. So I think I'm gonna debrand my Desire: method kindly outlined here by zeepool - uses a Goldcard from klutsch.com (whatever that is). You end up with debranded 2.1, and the option to download 2.2 pops up immediately.
2 questions though before I begin
1 - is this gonna invalidate my warranty?
2 - waiting for my SIM to be activated, but connected to internet via wifi - will the firmware upgrade be available to me or should I wait til I get bars on my phone (shouldn't be too long but want to try tonight) -

You're annoyed you're on 2.1. Ha!

so I'm new to android and after the awful bb storm a complete convert. i know very little about it and am learning all the best apps e.t.c is 2.2 the most up to date/ best version? if so may I say woohoo? I just checked in the settings and that's what I got. (hadn't even thought of checking till reading this thread)

1) yes, your warranty won't be worth the paper it was written on, but so fucking what, warranties are worthless anyway in most instances
2) I don't know, I'm drunk

Yes, but in theory, you can flash a stock ROM and Radio if you ever need to make a warranty claim, which will return it to stock goodness [badness?]
[but do it at your own risk, blah blah blah etc.]

Okay I'm doing it today. Will let you know how it turns out...

Okay, I'll say it.
I find it strange that you risk your one day old phone, with something you would get very, very soon anyway. I wouldn't have thought waiting a month or so would be that much of a torture.
Read up on what could go wrong, then decide. Oh yes, and if your phone needs to be returned to the original ROM, and o2 decide your OS has been tampered with, your phone is then worth less than a can of Ribena.
I'm hoping you wait the month till your 2.2 update is available. If o2 strip out WiFi ability, I'm sure there is a legal case to be made against them. Whatever your decision, good luck.
I'm a technology (mobile phones) fanboy. I have no special skills to bring to the table, save being an Android cheerleader.
"Well thought out", was not part of my remit when I joined the revered University of Fanboyism. I am currently doing my Masters. Thanks.
I'll continue to be an Android cheerleader if that's ok. But I will never on my life be able to compete with the specific knowledge base, of say, Andyp and hippy. I like them, and that's why I've used their names.
My inaccuracies shall hopefully be understood in future as the side effects of my time at the above mentioned university. I shall still be spontaneous, but maybe a bit less so. I know my limitations, in technical knowledge and otherwise. Since this is a Miscellaneous thread on a bike forum, I was hoping that the level of scrutiny was not the same as for a scientific or technology journal.
Apologies to everyone that might have been offended by my enthusiastic posts, and lack of relevant technical knowledge.
I may have to stop posting in this thread, if things continue this way. But that may be a good thing. Who knows?
