so I have read this whole thread which took a long, long time...
pretty sure I want an android based HTC, just not sure which one
desire is the obvious choice but not cheap - wildfire looks like a good cheaper option, gets good reviews, billed as a 'mini desire'. I know the screen is smaller and not as good and the processor is slower (same as in the hero) but sim free from a retailer a wildfire is about £230, which is about £200 less than the desire
is the desire really worth that much more?
I had my Wildfire for a week now and really like it. The phone is a nice size, and the functionality is far better then I expected. The 'HTC sense' is uber user friendly, and it has a decent camera (handy for me).

how do you find the screen? and texting?
I realise it's not going to run 3.0 and isn't close to a desire, but it will do a hell of a lot more than my Nokia 6330 a hell of a lot more quickly (and do 3G, fast web surfing etc.) as well as let me run android apps of course =)
I think I am probably making it to be more of an issue than it is - its probably not something to go back to, but as an upgrade from an older phone, it will be pretty good, I think
Do this :)
The one thing to remember is that you wont have a hardware kb to write on so I would try writing on either quite a bitfrom what I've read the HTC virtual keyboard is pretty much the best going, but I'm definitely going to give it a go on the smaller screen of the wildfire
Or buy one from (though I hate to say it) Gumtree. If its unlocked, even better, but if not.....make sure it can be unblocked.
ftfy ;)

My Mrs has the wildfire and I have the desire, both running 2.1. She's very happy with her's but I definitely wouldn't give up the desire. They have almost identical look and functionality, very minor differences due to resolution and there one button on the kb that's different. I can't see any difference in the cameras. The wildfire is only slightly slower to run.
Biggest difference is the screen, the size and the touch buttons instead of physical buttons.

I find texting on the small keyboard really quite fast, and that's with uber fat fingers. The screen size is perfect for my useage. I,m posting from it now in fact ;)

so the wildfire arrived at 9.45 this morning (thanks handtec, cheapest price and I ordered it at 3.45 yesteday afternoon)
went on charge at 10
can I play with it now? it's had a green light for ages and the back isn't warm now, I think it's stopped charging

Yeah should be ok. You won't get full charge for a few charge cycles anyway.

dont start 'teeter' you'll never stop.
Also dont worry if the touch screen and keyboard feel a bit difficult to use at first. It gets beautifully easy, very quickly.

Interesting one this. SamdroidNet forum have released a custom-made driver that adds multi-touch to the Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700. Its interesting because phone makers have said that such phones could not have multi-touch added later. This was obviously a lie, based on laziness.
Gameloft are offering a try-before-you-buy on their Android HD games. Phones supported are: HTC Incredible, HTC Desire, HTC EVO 4G, Google Nexus One, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10(i), Samsung Vibrant, Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Droid, Motorola Droid X, Motorola Motoroi/XT720, Motorola Milestone and coming soon to the Samsung Epic 4G and the Motorola Droid 2.

Sigh, no. Based on litigation and risk mitigation. But don't let that stop you from jumping to inflammatory conclusions.

I didn't "name" any phone makers.
Me only stoopid on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Me clever the rest of the time.
EDIT:
I did have one phone maker in mind, but it wasn't Samsung. -

My i7500 had 'multi-touch' available for it only a couple of months after it was out.
It's not the same multi-touch as on the Desire and N1 because the hardware doesn't take into account as many points or something so weirdness happens when doing drags or pinches. So, it's a kind of pseudo MT. I don't remember seeing much more work done on this because it just wasn't that useful. -
• #2520
I had fake multi-touch support for a non-multi-touch Synaptics track pad on Linux ages ago. Allowed for two finger scrolling (which I like way more than hot-zones).

Why are people still jumping on me? I've already moderated my behaviour all to hell. What else can I do? Would it be better if I had no opinions, and didn't post at all? This is really sad.
Mashton, I felt that Velocio's comment was not very fair, but your "+1" just smacks of me-too-ism. I've listened to the forum and adjusted my posting completely. What else should I do?

Sorry GA2G, it's just that I didn't agree with you about laziness when I read your post. Was about to write a reply about what I thought their motivation might've been, when i saw that velocio had already replied with pretty much what I wanted to say. So I, lazily, wrote "+1".
I meant to plus one the idea that it was about risk / litigation mitigation, not the part of his post that looked like "jumping on you".
Sorry. FWIW, I really appreciate you on the forum, particularly on this thread. Keep up the good work :-)

Your very friendly response at least deserves reppage, or a nice cold beer. If you see me at any drinks, remind me.

But my comment was a balanced and considered response to your post, which was inflammatory. So what I'm to understand is that you really don't appreciate and do find it dreadfully unfair when after making an inflammatory comment you get called on it. My point as made before elsewhere was not to making sweeping judgemental generalisations, to try and consider perspective from the view of others, and then suddenly perhaps companies aren't out to get 'you', but instead are looking to minimise the risk to their bottom line.
