Kind of related..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34465270But to answer you question, I use Ghostery, among other things:

Nice. I'll check out ghostery.
I'm actually getting used to Firefox with UBlock Origin extension. It seems to have less overhead than AdBlock Plus, at least.

Ok, Ghostery is really nice!
Also, it's only 2mb whereas Firefox is a great big 37mb, donut-eating whale. -

I use both. Firefox was my main browser until I installed Ghostery the other day. I'll do most browsing in Ghostery now and leave FF logged into LFGSS. Chrome for work stuff.

Adaway is very good in terms of also getting rid of ads in apps and so on (although, as you say, it does require your phone to be rooted which I guess could be a hassle).
Installed Marshmallow on Nexus 5 last night. First impressions are good. Seems to be a lot faster/smoother than lollipop. Will have to see how the battery life goes.
Rooting was a bit of a faff. The one-click options like Nexus Root Toolkit don't work, you need to flash a different kernel (and it also didn't seemed a bit of a faff to get a custom recovery on there).

It's a drag that Towelroot didn't get upgraded after KitKat, so easy to root your phone with that app... I'm sick of ads...
-

I think I'll wait for an easy marshmallow root and use adaway.
Quite liking ghostety in the meantime, although they seem to be a bit controversial.

Anyone got the OTA on their Nexus 5 yet?

Yes got it yesterday

So, just bust the glass screen on a 2014 moto x.
Motos CS won't tell me how much it will cost to get it fixed, but will send a dhl label to ship it to some random German company...
Has anyone had a moto x screen fixed, and could give me a price indication?

@ExTra I appreciate what you've said about One Plus and I've read enough about others' experiences with their customer services to see why you'd be that frustrated, but I have to say that I've had a Oneplus One since the middle of last year and it's been absolutely stellar. I rooted it straight away (piece of piss) and put Cyanogenmod nightlies on it pretty quickly. I pretty much have no complaints. The only issue I ever had was the CM devs breaking bluetooth for a while.
I don't know if I'd recommend an OPO or a OP2 just because of what I've heard from you and others in your situation, but my experience of the OPO has been brilliant.

Are people finding the new security permissions are working in Marshmallow. I was expecting something like Cyanogenmod where I got pop-ups when camera, contacts, location, etc were being used but I've only had that happen a couple of times.
There are a few apps (Amazon for instance) that often ask for location and I've not had any permission requests there.

It seems the issue is that if the app hasn't been updated for Marshmallow then it doesn't apply selective permissions and instead just gives blanket permission to everything that the app requests.
You have to go into the app settings and turn off the permissions.

That sounds shit but at least they are starting to address the perms problem I guess.

installed marshmallow on my nexus 5 the other night. New font, er.....volume looks a bit different. Nothings broken....

Fuck you Motorola. 200€ for a new glass screen? fuck fuck fuck.
next time I'm sticking with no-name cheapies that are essentially disposable (oneplus, wileyfox, etc)
-
• #16493
Can't you just get a cheap kit off eBay? They're normally under £50
-
• #16494
Marshmallow on my N5 OTA this evening. Still waiting on N7(2013)
-

Mate installed it last night. I saw the permissions thing. Seems useful. He said it was faster too.
I have root on my phone though so I'll probably have to jump through some hoops to get Marshmallow, right? Is there a version of it available yet that allows me to keep root?

My OTA came over this morning, haven't noticed anything majorly different yet...
-
• #16499
Main difference I've noticed with Marshmallow was having 80% battery when I plugged my phone in last night when I went to bed at 11pm.

I checked all that as soon as I downloaded it, apart from the slightly different date/alarm line on the home screen and the new start up animation, I'm none the wiser... Battery may be slightly better...
So, ad blocking on android...
The options aren't great. At all. AbBlock Browser doesn't work as nicely as chrome and is noticeably slower. Firefox works with adblock extensions but its UI is not that nice and it's generally quite bloated / not as smooth as chrome.
AdAway requires root, which I'd rather not do.
There must be a more elegant solution...
