The protrusion is less than a mil so I'd not even noticed it until you said. Not sure what difference it makes unless you're the kind of person that uses a spirit level when you put your phone down?

Why wouldn't you connect to public wifi with the VPN enabled?

I've been running OpenVPN on my Nexus for quite a while now. Assumed everything was routed through it but haven't done any testing.

Public wifi won't let the traffic through without logging in, and with the VPN connection active, the request for the login page won't work.

Only now, after my new toy arrives do I realise I didn't backup photos.

VPN routes requests to your own network. Login page is local to the AP, not routable from your network.

AP refuses to route traffic for clients who haven't got a login token, hence you have no VPN connection anyway.

Maybe I'm using the wrong phrase, by VPN, I mean a VPN tunnel. could be SSH, but you'd still have the situation described, so would need an exemption for the tunnel for public-wifi-requiring-login.
