  • Is there any reason not to buy a new, sealed and supposedly factory unlocked HTC One from ebay? Seller (UK based) has seemingly good rep and mentions warranty is valid. Just cautious as it's £80 cheaper than any other one. Never bought from the bay so a bit sceptical.

  • OK so I think I'm going to root my S2 tonight.

What roms would you guys recommend? I'm thinking of Cynogen then maybe some root access battery saver app.

    Anything else?

  • resurrected my S3. Had to hack the a rom installer script. For some reason my S3 wasn't reporting that it actually WAS an S3. Now running the latest version of MIUI. Quite like it.

Ran that on a couple of phones, not tried it on my S3. Any problems?

No good reason no, just be prepared to fight your corner if you have to in case things go wrong.

Pay by a credit card via paypal to max out your chances to claim off someone else if needs be. Make sure you keep a record of any items posted, messages sent etc.

Well the "Remember permission" tick box is in Chinese. Umm other than that nothing springs to mind. Seems to work fine

  • I have big love for the OpenVPN client in Android and http://www.iVPN.net

No good for app permissions, but very good for privacy when on open wifi and to prevent your mobile operator seeing what you're doing.

  • yeah I'm using Private Internet Access http://www.privateinternetaccess.com and it works perfectly. Found they have the best speeds from US -> UK. I also have Witopia incase I'm stuck in India again

HTC Sense may be a reason

i ran Slim on my S2 for a year.

you won't need a battery saver.

  • Will that really get me much better battery life? Rom looks nice.

  • Backing up all sms now ahead of rooting and installing cynoagen taking forever to back up sms.

  • Do you really need to?

    "I'll see you in 15min"
    "Ok"
    "Bring lube"
    "Ok"

I know nothing about phone VPNs. Is there an app I could use existing Cisco VPN profiles with? What about Windows VPN connections - can I just enter the URLs and it'll work?

  • HTC Sense may be a reason

Ha, yeah. But at least I have the option to remove it with a custom rom or flat out standard android. I think... Moot point anyway. Phone seems to have vanished of the listings. Everything is back up to £480+

  • Installed Paranoid Android on my Nexus 4. It's good, but not sure how much better it is.

  • PA is nice with Halo and a few other things they are developing
I ended up going to Miui becuase I was running bleeding edge PA which fucked up my my S3 to the point where it would not tell Odin/bootloader what phone it actually was :S

With iVPN and the OpenVPN client, basically you install the client on the phone.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.blinkt.openvpn&hl=en

And then you download a profile from iVPN and import it into the OpenVPN client.

It uses UDP for communication, and you will achieve around 70-80% of whatever your connection speed.

When enabled, it's totally invisible to you. You won't have to use any special browser or browser plugin, all internet traffic will go over the VPN. Whether it's GMail using IMAP, Dolphin using https, or even an SSH session.

Everything gets encrypted invisibly, and you can pick whatever endpoint you want to us, to make it appear that you have a US, EU or UK connection, etc.

And if you want to get paranoid you can double-hop... sending the traffic to the US before routing back to the UK.

The whole thing is invisible to you after setup, and you only need connect every once in a while (if you've gone without reception for a while... then you may have to reconnect manually).

  • Cool, I get how the VPN bit works, just wondering if I can use existing VPN connections I have available with it? Say I have a work VPN profile (Cisco pcf or Windows SSTP) - can I plug that in or does it need to be one of these OpenVPN profiles from a public provider?

  • Well, they're different things, but there are apps for the Cisco based VPNs or L2TP/IPSEC VPNs.

I use OpenVPN as it works everywhere and it works with my VPN provider and I get great speed, but yeah... you can get clients that work specifically with the Cisco profiles.

  • Who is your VPN provider? I'm looking for one to use.

I chose them because they obsess over privacy, protecting journalists, activists and the like rather than focusing on bit torrent and piracy.

If you're looking for piracy, just consider a seedbox from someone like https://whatbox.ca/ or www.feralhosting.com

But I, value privacy, value free speech, and went for a provider that really does shoot for that more than anything.

  • Having said that, it appears iVPN's front-end database is down right now, meaning you can't sign up at this moment. Their service is still rock solid though, as I'm still connected.

  • That'll be the rush of subscriptions you've just created. :)

  • Rooted phone. Ended up finished around 3 am. Going through battery cycles now. Seems to me thatits much more responsive than before.

Any kernels you'd recommend for battery life?
